Slim or full: the same height, and 20 square feet of difference
A full 7.5 ft tree is 59 inches across. A slim one is about half that. The published figures turn that into floor area, ornament room and tips per foot.
By Sawyer V. · Published

Height gets all the attention and width decides whether the tree fits. Two 7.5 ft trees can differ by more than two feet across the base, which is the difference between a tree in the corner of a room and a tree that has taken the room over.
The useful comparison is not slim against full in the abstract. It is published width and published tip count together, because a slim tree with a high tip count is a different product from a slim tree that is simply sparse.

How we compared them
Published width where the listing gives it, published tip count, and tips per foot. Then floor area, which is the figure that actually decides the purchase and which no listing prints.
| Tree | Profile | Width | Tips | Tips per ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| National Dunhill slim | Slim, pre-lit | Not stated | 1,600 | 213 |
| National Tiffany slim | Slim, pre-lit | Not stated | 1,878 | 250 |
| National Dunhill full | Full, unlit | 59 in | 2,514 | 335 |
| Treepool full | Full, unlit | Not stated | 2,652 | 354 |
Only one of these four publishes a width, which is the single most important figure in this comparison. Tips per foot is our arithmetic.

Floor area is the number that decides it
A tree occupies a circle. Circles grow with the square of the radius, so a modest increase in width is a large increase in floor taken.
The arithmetic
- Full tree, published 59 in wide: radius 29.5 in, area = 3.14 x 29.5 squared = 2,734 sq in = 19 sq ft
- A slim tree at an assumed 36 in wide: radius 18 in, area = 3.14 x 18 squared = 1,018 sq in = 7 sq ft
- 19 - 7 = 12 sq ft of floor returned
- Ratio: 2,734 / 1,018 = 2.7
The full tree takes about 2.7 times the floor of a 36 in slim tree — roughly twelve square feet, which in a small sitting room is an armchair. Our slim width is an assumption because three of these four listings do not publish one; measure the spot before you order.
That arithmetic is why slim trees exist, and it is also why they are worth buying taller: a slim 9 ft tree takes less floor than a full 7 ft one. The height side of the decision is on 9 ft Christmas trees and trees for low ceilings.
Ornament room, not just foliage
A full tree has deeper branches, and depth is where ornaments hang without touching each other. On a slim tree the branches are short, so ornaments sit close to the trunk and large baubles crowd. That is a real constraint, and it is the reason a slim tree suits small ornaments and lights rather than a heavy mixed collection.
The arithmetic
- Site convention for a full tree: 18 ornaments per vertical foot at a medium density
- A 7.5 ft full tree: 7.5 x 18 = 135 ornaments
- A slim tree with about two-thirds the branch depth: 7.5 x 12 = 90 ornaments
- 135 - 90 = 45 fewer ornaments
A slim tree of the same height holds roughly a third fewer ornaments before it looks crowded. The full count by height and density is on how many ornaments for a tree.
Pre-lit slim, unlit full
Both slim trees here are pre-lit at 600 lights and both full trees are unlit, which follows the market: slim trees are bought for convenience in tight rooms, full trees by people who want to light them their own way. If you are lighting a full tree yourself, 100 lights per vertical foot is the working figure, so a 7.5 ft full tree wants around 750.
Who should buy which
Buy slim if the tree goes in a corner, a hallway, a bay window or a room where twelve square feet matters — and buy the one with the higher published tip count, because that is what stops slim looking sparse. The field is on slim and pencil Christmas trees.
Buy full if you have the floor and a collection to hang — depth of branch is what makes a big ornament sit properly, and 2,500 tips is what makes a tree look full without help. Start with the best artificial Christmas trees.

- Slim profile fits a corner or a narrow hall without dropping to a pencil tree's sparseness
Watch out
- 600 lights across 7.5 ft is on the low side; plan on adding a string if you want a bright tree
- Pre-lit means the lights and the tree retire together

Questions
›How much floor space does a slim Christmas tree save?
About twelve square feet against a full 7.5 ft tree: a published 59 in width works out to 19 sq ft, and a 36 in slim tree to about 7 sq ft. That is 2.7 times the floor for the full tree.
›Do slim trees hold fewer ornaments?
Yes, roughly a third fewer at the same height, because the branches are shorter and ornaments crowd toward the trunk. Slim trees suit smaller ornaments and lights.
›What is a good tip count for a slim tree?
Compare tips per foot rather than the total. The slim trees here publish 213 and 250 per foot; below about 200 a slim tree starts to look thin rather than narrow.
›Is a slim 9 ft tree better than a full 7 ft tree for a small room?
Usually, yes — height costs nothing in floor area and width costs it by the square. Check ceiling clearance for the topper first.
