Decor storage, sized by the numbers instead of the label

This is the section the rest of the site orbits, and it is deliberately a peer category rather than a Christmas sub-page. Storage is the only part of seasonal decorating that matters twice a year, in January when everything comes down and again in October when it goes back up, and it is the part that decides whether last year’s purchases are still usable.

It is also the category where the published numbers are least trustworthy, in one very specific way: the size on the label describes the container, not the opening. A 24-inch wreath box holds a wreath that measures under about 22 inches across its greenery. A tree bag rated “up to 9 ft” tells you nothing about whether it goes on your shelf. A reel “for Christmas lights” usually publishes no capacity at all.

How we evaluate storage

Four criteria, applied consistently, and the first one carries the most weight:

• Published capacity or dimensions. Whether the maker tells you what it holds, in a unit you can convert. A bag that publishes its external dimensions beats a slightly better-made one that does not, because you can check it against your own shelf before it arrives.
• Structure. Whether it keeps its shape under a stack. This is what separates a hard-shell case from a zip bag, and it decides whether the thing inside survives.
• Handling. Wheels, handles, straps, and whether you can move it full without help.
• Stated limits. Maximum ornament height, maximum roll length, connection limits. The specs that predict a return.

Containers are the easy part

The reason setting up takes a whole weekend is not usually that things are in the wrong boxes. It is that nobody remembers which box holds the thing they need next. Three habits fix most of it, and none of them costs anything:

1. Sort by destination, not by object type. A box that holds everything the porch needs is a complete job. A box that holds all the lights is five jobs mixed together.
2. Label the short end — the end that faces you on a shelf — with the zone, a box number out of the total, and a few words of contents.
3. Photograph each box before closing it. Thirty seconds, and it beats any written inventory.
