How much space a seasonal collection actually takes
Cubic feet, worked from published dimensions. The number to have before you buy either the containers or the shelving.

Most people buy storage containers the way they buy anything else — one at a time, when a problem appears. The result is a shelf of mismatched boxes that do not stack, and a tree bag discovered to be four inches too tall for the space it was bought for.
The alternative takes ten minutes and one multiplication. Work out the volume first, convert it into a container count, then buy once against a shelf you have measured. Every figure below is either a published dimension or arithmetic printed on this page.

Everything in cubic feet
Containers are sold in three different units — gallons, inches, and “fits up to” claims — which makes them impossible to add up. Convert everything to cubic feet once and the whole problem becomes arithmetic.
The arithmetic
- 1 cubic foot = 1,728 cubic inches
- 1 US gallon = 231 cubic inches
- A 27 gal tote = 27 x 231 = 6,237 cubic inches = 3.6 cu ft

One nine-foot tree bag equals about 7.6 of the 27-gallon totes it will sit next to.

A worked example, with the inputs stated
The numbers below are an illustration built from published container volumes, not a claim about your house. Substitute your own counts — the point is the method.
The arithmetic
- 1 artificial tree in a 9 ft bag: 27.4 cu ft
- 4 general totes at 3.6 cu ft each: 14.4 cu ft
- 1 wreath box: allow 1 full shelf depth
- 2 ornament boxes and 1 gift wrap container: allow 2 totes' worth = 7.2 cu ft
- 27.4 + 14.4 + 7.2 = 49 cu ft, plus the wreath box
A modest collection on these inputs comes to about 49 cubic feet — and 56 percent of it is the tree.
That last line is the finding worth carrying away. The tree dominates, so the shelf has to be planned around the tree bag first and the totes second. Doing it the other way round is how people end up with a bag stored on its side in a doorway.
Sizing a shelf against the number
Once you have a cubic-feet figure, a shelf is a second multiplication. Measure a bay of the shelving you actually own or intend to buy, and convert it the same way.
The arithmetic
- A shelf bay 48 in wide x 18 in deep x 24 in of clear height
- 48 x 18 x 24 = 20,736 cubic inches
- 20,736 / 1,728 = 12 cu ft per bay
- 49 cu ft of collection / 12 cu ft per bay = 4.1
The example collection needs about four bays of that size — and the tree bag at 34 in tall will not fit any of them.
Buying containers once
The reason to do this arithmetic before buying rather than after is that identical containers stack and mismatched ones do not. Once you know the count, buy that count in one order.
A four-pack of 27-gallon totes is the sensible unit for one room's worth — 14.4 cubic feet in a single order, all the same footprint. The twelve-pack is 43.3 cubic feet and is what you buy when re-basing an entire attic in one go, which is the only time it is cheaper than buying twice. The two ways to need less space
If the number comes out larger than the space you have, there are only two honest responses, and neither is stacking higher.
Buy items that collapse. A telescoping ornament box adjusts its height to the trays you actually loaded rather than holding a fixed volume of air, which is the only container in this category that gets smaller when you own less. Collapsible wreaths and folding pumpkins do the same thing for the seasonal pieces.
Own less. A collection that does not fit is a collection with something in it that has not been used in three years. The audit is easiest at the spring reset, when everything is out of its boxes at once — that timing is on the spring porch refresh, and where the boxes then live is on attic, garage or basement.

Convert everything to cubic feet and divide. A 27-gallon tote is 3.6 cubic feet, so four of them is 14.4. Work out the tree separately — a nine-foot tree bag at 58 by 24 by 34 inches is 27.4 cubic feet on its own, more than seven totes.

About 27.4 cubic feet in a bag that publishes 58 by 24 by 34 inches, and it needs 34 inches of clear height. On a typical collection it is over half the total volume, so plan the shelf around it first.
›What size shelf do I need for holiday storage?
Multiply the bay dimensions and convert: a 48 by 18 inch shelf with 24 inches of clear height is 12 cubic feet. Then check the largest single dimension of your biggest item against the clear opening, because that is what actually stops things fitting.
