Bins, bags or totes: what to put Christmas decorations in
Three container types, three different jobs. Crush resistance, stacking, seal and cost per gallon, plus what belongs in each.

Most households end up with all three container types, which is correct. The mistake is not owning the wrong one, it is putting the wrong thing in it — a wreath in a fabric bag under a tote, ornaments in a soft box at the bottom of a stack.

Cost per gallon is the honest tote metric
Totes are sold in packs, and pack size is where the value is. The 27-gallon size is effectively the standard for seasonal storage: big enough to be worth carrying, small enough to lift when full.
The arithmetic
- 27 gal per tote is the standard seasonal size
- A 4-pack gives 108 gal of storage
- A 12-pack gives 324 gal
- Compare (pack price) / (gallons) across pack sizes before buying
Buy the pack size that matches the shelf, then compare on cost per gallon rather than cost per box.
There is a second, less obvious argument for buying a pack: identical totes stack predictably and label consistently. Twelve matching totes is a system; twelve mismatched ones is a pile you rearrange every year.
Nothing here is actually sealed
Snap-on lids are not gasketed. Zippers are not weatherproof. Every container in this comparison keeps out dust and casual moisture and none of them keeps out a damp garage over eleven months.
If your storage is genuinely damp, the fix is location rather than container: get the stack off the concrete floor onto shelving or pallets, and keep it away from the exterior wall where condensation runs. A tote on a wet floor wicks moisture into whatever is at the bottom of it regardless of how good the lid is.
What goes where
- Rigid totes: tree stands, tree skirts, non-fragile figures, outdoor stakes, spare clips, cords. Anything that can take a knock.
- Fabric bags: garland, net lights, tree skirts, artificial greenery, the tree itself. Soft, bulky, awkward-shaped things where the bag can take the shape.
- Hard-shell cases: wreaths and ornaments — the two categories where the object is nothing but structure. See wreath containers and ornament boxes.
- Reels, not containers: light strands and extension cords. A strand in a tote is a knot no matter how good the tote is — see storage reels.
Clear or opaque
Clear totes let you see the contents, which sounds decisive and mostly is not: they are usually stacked, so you only ever see the top one, and holiday storage contents look alike through translucent plastic anyway. A large, legible label on the short end — the end that faces you on the shelf — beats transparency every time.
