Inflatables are the highest-impact-per-dollar item in outdoor Halloween and the one most likely to be lying flat on the lawn by the second week. Two decisions determine which of those you get: how many blowers you are running, and how you anchor.

One big piece beats four small ones
Every inflatable is a fan running continuously, plus a plug, plus a set of stakes and tethers to fail. A single multi-figure piece — a tree with several figures on it, a scene rather than a character — gives you the same visual coverage on one of everything.

Anchoring, which is the whole game
An 8-foot inflatable is a sail with a surface area of several square yards. Wind does not push it over so much as lift it, which is why the failure is usually stakes pulling straight out of the ground.
- Use every stake and tether supplied. The count is not padding. Write it on the storage box so you know when one is missing.
- Drive stakes at roughly 45 degrees, angled away from the figure. A vertical stake resists only friction; an angled one loads against the soil column.
- Tether from the upper attachment points, not just the base. The lift is at the top, so that is where the restraint belongs.
- On a hard surface, use weight instead. Sandbags or water weights on the base skirt. Do not improvise with anything that could tear the fabric.
- Deflate in a real wind. Deflated it is a puddle of fabric. Inflated in a gale it is a torn seam, and seams do not repair well.
The blower load
Not one maker in this category publishes a fan wattage in the listing. The figure is on the blower housing or the power supply; find it once, write it on the storage box, and put it in the load calculator.
What is worth understanding is that the blower is a genuinely continuous load. It runs the entire time the figure is up — several hours a night, every night, for a month — which puts it in a different category from lights that only have to be bright.
Feed a yard display from a stake timer with several grounded outlets rather than a cube tap on a cord in the grass. That is what those exist for; picks are in outdoor light timers.
Animated pieces
Animation catches an eye that a static shape does not, and it costs you two things: more current, and more to go wrong. Motors and linkages are the first components to fail on an inflatable, and they are not repairable in any practical sense.
One animated anchor piece plus static supporting figures is the arrangement that gets the effect without multiplying the risk.
Getting more than three seasons out of one
Coated polyester fails at the folds and at the seams, and both failures are storage failures rather than use failures. Dry the piece completely before it goes away, fold along the same lines every year rather than randomly, keep it in a rigid tote where rodents cannot reach it, and it will outlast the ones your neighbors replace annually. ›How do you anchor a Halloween inflatable properly?
Use every supplied stake and tether, drive stakes at about 45 degrees angled away from the figure, and tether from the upper attachment points where the lift actually is. On a hard surface, weight the base skirt instead.
›How much power does a Halloween inflatable blower use?
No maker publishes it in the listing. The figure is on the blower housing or the power supply. It is a continuous load — the fan runs the whole time the figure is up — so it is worth finding once and writing on the box.
›How long do Halloween inflatables last?
It depends far more on storage than on use. Coated polyester fails at the folds and seams, so drying it fully, folding along the same lines each year and keeping stakes in a separate bag is what determines whether you get three seasons or ten.
