The best outdoor porch curtains, sized by the opening rather than the picture
Most of these listings show a beautiful porch and never tell you how wide the panel is. Two panels of the wrong width is a wasted weekend.
By Sawyer V. · Published

Curtains turn a porch into a room. They cut the late afternoon sun on a west-facing front, they give a street-side porch enough privacy to actually sit on, and in a breeze they do more for the look of a house than any amount of furniture.
They are also the one outdoor decoration where buying the wrong size is unrecoverable: a panel four inches too long drags in the dirt, and two panels for an eight-foot opening hang flat and mean. Everything below is ranked on whether the listing tells you enough to get it right the first time. Five panels, one to skip.

Good
- Both dimensions, the grommet size and the weave all published
- Rustproof stainless grommets, which is what fails first on a cheap outdoor curtain

Watch out
- One panel per listing, so a porch opening needs two or three
- Blackout weave is heavy; it wants a rod that can carry it

How we ranked these
Published dimensions first, and it is remarkable how few clear that bar. Then grommet hardware, because rust streaks down a white panel are what ends most outdoor curtains. Then the weave, because a curtain that blocks sun is doing the job you bought it for. Then care instructions, because a porch curtain gets pollen, dust and spider webs on it and has to be washable.

How many panels an opening actually takes
This is the arithmetic that decides the purchase, and it is not one panel per side. Curtains look right when the fabric is wider than the opening, so it gathers instead of stretching.
The arithmetic
- Example porch opening between two posts: 8 ft = 96 in
- Flat coverage with 52 in panels: 96 / 52 = 1.85, so 2 panels just cover it with no gather
- At 1.5x fullness: 96 x 1.5 = 144 in, and 144 / 52 = 2.8, so 3 panels
- At 2x fullness, the drapery standard: 96 x 2 = 192 in, and 192 / 52 = 3.7, so 4 panels
Three panels per 8 ft opening is the sensible middle: enough gather to read as curtains, and they still stack clear of the opening when tied back. Two panels covers the gap but hangs like a sheet.
A three-sided porch with two 8 ft openings and one 12 ft opening needs roughly ten panels at that fullness, which is where a six-panel set starts to look like the cheaper route — if you are willing to buy without knowing the panel width.
Length is measured from the rod, not the ceiling
The 95 in length that dominates this category exists because eight-foot porch ceilings are standard. The trap is that the rod hangs below the ceiling, so 95 in of panel under a rod mounted four inches down ends up on the deck.
The arithmetic
- Porch ceiling: 8 ft = 96 in
- Rod bracket 4 in below the ceiling: rod at 92 in above the deck
- Panel length from the rod: 95 in
- Result: 95 - 92 = 3 in of panel on the floor
Mount the rod as close to the ceiling as the brackets allow, or plan to hem. Outdoors, a curtain that touches the deck wicks water up the hem and stays dirty, so aim to finish an inch clear.
Grommets are the part that fails
A 1.6 in grommet fits a standard 1 in outdoor rod with room to slide, which is the difference between curtains you actually pull and curtains that stay where they are. More importantly, stainless grommets do not rust. Plated steel grommets on an outdoor panel will bleed orange down a light fabric within two seasons, and no wash takes it out. The NICETOWN panel is the only one here that names its grommet material, which is the single biggest reason it wins.
Waterproof, blackout and shade are three different claims
Every panel here says waterproof, which on a curtain usually means the fabric sheds a spatter rather than that it will keep a driving rain off your furniture. A triple weave does two useful things: it blocks more sun, so the porch stays cooler in the afternoon, and it gives privacy after dark when the porch light is the brightest thing on the street. A light sheer panel gives you movement and softness and essentially no sun control. Decide which of the three you are buying for before the color.
Why the second BONZER listing is the skip
The BONZER alternate listing is a near twin of the same brand’s other entry, and neither publishes a width, a length or a panel count. Two identical undocumented listings from one brand is a signal on its own: buy the panel that tells you what arrives.
The rest of the summer porch
Curtains are the walls; the ceiling and the railing are separate jobs. Our summer porch decor guide covers the bunting arithmetic for a railing, and patio string lights plus how to hang them covers the evening lighting that makes a curtained porch usable after dark. For an enclosed spot with no posts to anchor to, string light poles solve the same structural problem curtains have.
Questions
›How many outdoor curtain panels do I need for an 8 ft opening?
Three 52 in panels gives about 1.5 times fullness, which is the point where they read as curtains rather than sheets. Two panels cover the gap flat; four gives full drapery fullness.
›What length outdoor curtain fits a porch?
Measure from the rod, not the ceiling. A 95 in panel under a rod mounted four inches below an eight-foot ceiling finishes three inches onto the deck, so mount high or hem it to finish an inch clear.
›Are outdoor curtains actually waterproof?
Read waterproof here as shower resistant. These panels shed spatter and dry quickly; they are not a wall, and a driving rain will still get behind them.
›Can outdoor porch curtains be washed?
One listing here publishes a temperature — machine washable below 86F. That matters, because a porch curtain collects pollen and dust and needs a wash at least once a season.
