The best Christmas doormats, sized to the door and honest about coir
A doormat is the one decoration every guest stands on. Size against the door, real coir versus faux, and whether a storm door clears it decide which one.
By Sawyer V. · Published

The doormat is the cheapest Christmas decoration on the house and the only one every visitor stands on. It also has a job: scraping snow, salt and grit off boots before they reach the hall carpet. A mat that looks good and does not scrape is a rug with a picture on it.
Every mat below is a Christmas design at the standard front-door size, and all but one are real coconut coir. Five below, one to skip.

How we ranked these
Scraping first, which means real coir and published thickness. Then fit against a standard 36 in front door, then the backing that keeps it from sliding, then how much the listing bothers to tell you.
| Mat | Size | Thickness | Surface | Backing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AerWo | 30 x 17 in | 0.5 in | Coconut coir | Thickened non-slip PVC |
| OurWarm | 30 x 17 in | Not stated | Coir | Anti-slip PVC |
| Breling scalloped | Not stated | Not stated | Coir | Not stated |
| Breling Ho Ho Ho | Not stated | Not stated | Coir, black | Not stated |
| LIANGEAGOM | 17 x 30 in | Not stated | Faux coco coir | Not stated |
Sizes are the listings' own. Only one listing here publishes a thickness.

30 in against a 36 in door
The arithmetic
- Standard front door: 36 in wide
- Standard mat: 30 in wide
- 36 - 30 = 6 in, or 3 in of threshold showing each side
- Mat depth 17 in against a typical adult stride
A 30 x 17 in mat is the size that reads as deliberate under a 36 in door: wide enough to catch both feet, narrow enough that the threshold frames it. On a double door, two mats or one runner-length mat is the answer, not one 30 in mat floating in the middle.
Coir, and what faux coir gives up
Coconut coir is stiff natural fiber, and stiffness is what scrapes a boot. Four of the five mats here are coir. The LIANGEAGOM is sold as faux coco coir, a synthetic pile made to look like it, which is why it is the skip on a page about a mat that has to work in December.
Coir has two honest downsides. It sheds loose fiber for the first few weeks, and it is a natural fiber that holds water, so a mat that sits in blown snow stays damp. Under a covered porch it dries between storms; in the open it is worth shaking out and standing on edge after a thaw.
The backing is what stops the slide
Two listings name a PVC anti-slip backing and two do not mention a backing at all. On a painted porch board or a tile entry, an unbacked coir mat slides when a boot hits it at an angle. If the mat you want does not name one, a pair of rug grippers under the corners solves it for the price of a coffee.
The mat and the rug under it
The layered look on a Christmas porch is a small coir mat over a larger flat rug, the same trick our fall page uses. The sizes have to step: a 30 x 17 in mat on top of a rug of roughly 27 x 45 in leaves an even border of rug showing all round. The fall version of exactly this pairing, with the rug sizes, is on fall doormats and the rug that goes under them.
The rest of the doorway
A mat is the floor of a doorway that usually also has a wreath and a light above it. The full front-door plan is on front porch Christmas decor and Christmas door decorations. When January comes, coir mats store flat and dry — never rolled damp; the system is on holiday storage ideas.
Questions
›What size doormat fits a standard front door?
30 x 17 in. That leaves about 3 in of threshold showing each side of a 36 in door, which is what makes it look fitted rather than dropped.
›Is a coir doormat good in snow?
Coir scrapes better than any synthetic pile, but it is a natural fiber that holds water. Under a covered porch it dries between storms; in the open, shake it out and stand it on edge after a thaw.
›Will a doormat fit under a storm door?
Measure the gap first. The one mat here that publishes a thickness is 0.5 in, and an outswing storm door with less clearance than that will catch on it.
›What is faux coir?
A synthetic pile printed and tufted to look like coconut fiber. It holds print color well and scrapes less, which is why we skip it on a winter doormat.
