The best Christmas door decorations, measured against a real door

A standard front door is 36 by 80 inches. Almost nothing sold to cover one publishes a size, and the few that do are the ones worth buying.

By Sawyer V. · Published

Lit garland wound along a staircase banister

A standard American exterior door is 36 inches wide and 80 inches tall. That is the only number that matters on this page, and it is the number almost nothing in this category is measured against in its own listing.

So this is a fit page. Five ways to dress a front door — a cover, a banner, two different no-drill fixings and a hanging sign — ranked on whether the listing tells you enough to know it will work on your door before it arrives.

Wreath & Watt earns a commission on qualifying purchases made through the Amazon links on this page. It costs you nothing and it does not change the order of the picks — here is exactly how we are funded.

#1 — Hanging greenery on a door frame without drilling

Village Lighting adjustable double door framer

Good

  • A published 20 lb limit is the only load figure anyone in this category prints, and it is the number that decides whether wet greenery stays up
  • No-drill fixing is what makes a decorated door frame possible in a rental

Watch out

  • It holds decorations; it is not one — the garland is a separate purchase
  • No published material, so corrosion resistance on an exterior frame is unknown

#2 — The only published fit range

Merry Christmas door banner with stretch bands

Stretch bands fit door heights 79 to 92 in

The best-documented item on this page. It does less than a full cover and it is the only one that tells you whether it fits.

Good

  • A published fit range rather than a single dimension — it tells you in advance whether it works on your door
  • Stretch bands need no adhesive, no tape and no hardware, and leave nothing behind

Watch out

  • A 2 ft band across the door is decoration, not coverage — the door still shows
  • Stretch bands over an exterior door interfere with a storm door if you have one

#3 — Covering the whole door face

Christmas door cover banner, 72.8 x 35.4 in

72.8 x 35.4 in — sized for a standard 36 x 80 in door

Buy it knowing it covers the width and not the full height. Against an 80 in door that gap is visible from the walk.

Good

  • 35.4 in of width covers a standard 36 in door leaf almost exactly
  • A published size at all, which two thirds of this category does not manage

Watch out

  • 72.8 in of height leaves roughly 7 in of an 80 in door showing at top or bottom
  • No published fixing method, so plan on your own tape or hooks

#4 — Steel doors, no fixings at all

Aeranto magnetic door hooks, 2 pack

Holds up to 10 lb on a steel surface

Check your door with a magnet before buying. On steel it is the best fixing here; on anything else it is nothing.

Good

  • 10 lb on a steel door with no hardware and no mark left behind is the cleanest fixing available
  • Anti-scratch liners are published, which matters on a painted exterior door

Watch out

  • Useless on a wooden or fiberglass door, which is most front doors
  • 10 lb is half what the door framer carries, and a soaked live wreath can exceed it

How we ranked these

Published dimensions or a published load rating first. Then whether the fixing damages the door. Then how much of the door it actually addresses. A beautiful thing that does not fit is not a decoration; it is a return.

The door cover that does not cover the door

This is the single most useful thing on the page. The fabric cover publishes 72.8 by 35.4 inches, and a standard door leaf is 36 by 80. The width is fine. The height is not.

The arithmetic

  1. Door leaf: 80 in tall, 36 in wide
  2. Cover: 72.8 in tall, 35.4 in wide
  3. 80 - 72.8 = 7.2 in of door showing
  4. 36 - 35.4 = 0.6 in of door showing

Just over 7 inches of bare door at the top or the bottom, and effectively full coverage across the width. Hang it high and the gap goes behind the threshold; hang it low and it is at eye level.

That is not a defect — it is a published dimension doing its job. The only reason it is a surprise is that nobody checks. Measure your door leaf before ordering anything in this category, and if you have a storm door, measure the gap between the two as well.

Load ratings, and what a wet wreath weighs

Two items here publish a weight limit and they are the two you would actually hang something from. The Village door framer carries 20 lb across up to three nine-foot garlands; the magnetic hooks carry 10 lb on steel.

Ten pounds sounds ample for a wreath and often is not. A live wreath that has absorbed rain gains substantial weight over an artificial one of the same size, and the failure mode is the hanger letting go in the middle of the night. If the wreath is live and the door is exposed, buy the load rating you need rather than the one that looks generous. More on the hanger side of that on wreath hangers.

Framing the door or covering it

These are two different projects and people conflate them. Covering the face is a decorating decision that hides your door; framing the opening in greenery is an architectural one that emphasizes it.

The framer is the harder and better-looking of the two, and the reason people do not do it is that hanging 20 lb of garland on a painted frame usually means hardware. A no-drill adjustable hanger removes that objection entirely — and it needs greenery bought separately, which is on Christmas garland and sized on how much garland do I need.

Everything on an exterior door is in the weather

A fabric panel across an exterior door is a sail with a hinge behind it. Every time the door opens, it moves; every time the wind gusts, it lifts. Fix all four corners rather than the top two, and expect adhesive fixings to fail below freezing.

The banner’s stretch bands are the honest answer to that — they hold under tension over the leaf rather than sticking to it, and they publish a fit range of 79 to 92 inches, which is the only compatibility figure anyone on this page prints. The one caveat is that anything wrapped over the leaf fouls a storm door.

The cheapest door decoration is ribbon

Worth saying plainly on a page of manufactured door decorations: a wide wired ribbon bow at the top of a plain wreath, or a ribbon run vertically down a plain door, costs a fraction of anything here and is the thing that most reliably reads as intentional.

If you go that way, the sizing and the bow method are on Christmas ribbon and bows and how to make a wreath bow.

The door is one element of an entry

A decorated door against an undecorated porch reads as unfinished, which is why the door framer tends to look better than the door cover — it connects the door to the structure around it rather than treating it as a panel.

The rest of the entry is covered on front porch Christmas decor, the windows either side on Christmas window decorating, and the wreath itself on the wreath size guide.

Questions

What size is a Christmas door cover?

The one here publishes 72.8 by 35.4 inches. A standard exterior door leaf is 36 by 80, so that covers the width almost exactly and leaves just over 7 inches of door showing at the top or the bottom. Measure your leaf before ordering.

How do you decorate a front door without making holes?

Three ways, all represented here: an adjustable frame hanger that grips the frame with no screws and carries up to 20 lb, magnetic hooks that carry 10 lb on a steel door, and stretch bands that hold a banner over the leaf under tension.

Will a magnetic wreath hanger work on my front door?

Only if the door is steel. Hold a fridge magnet to the door face before you order — wood, fiberglass and composite doors are all common and none of them will hold a magnet.

Can you put a door cover on an exterior door with a storm door?

Not usually. Anything that wraps over the leaf, including stretch-band banners, takes up the clearance between the two doors. Measure that gap first, or decorate the storm door instead of the door behind it.
