The fall doormat has quietly become a two-piece product: a printed coir mat on top, a larger woven rug underneath. It looks like a style choice. It is actually a size fix.
Coir welcome mats are almost all 30 by 17 inches, and a standard front door is 36 inches wide, so a single mat always looks slightly too small. A rug underneath closes the gap. Five pieces below — three coir mats and two layering rugs — with the arithmetic for putting them together.

The layering arithmetic
The arithmetic
- Door: 36 in wide. Coir mat: 30 in wide = 6 in narrower
- On the JTL 27.5 x 45 in rug: (45 - 30) / 2 = 7.5 in each side
- Front and back: (27.5 - 17) / 2 = 5.25 in
- On the KIMODE 24 x 51 in rug: (51 - 30) / 2 = 10.5 in each side, (24 - 17) / 2 = 3.5 in front and back
The JTL leaves an even border all round and runs 9 in wider than the door — the proportion that makes a layered mat look deliberate. The KIMODE's border is mostly at the sides, which suits a wide entry or double doors.
That is why the JTL rug is our base-layer pick for a standard door, and the KIMODE for anything wider.
Coir does the work
The coir mat on top is the functional part. Stiff coconut fiber scrapes a shoe in a way cotton cannot, and fall is when the porch meets wet leaves and mud. The Fallovea publishes an anti-slip PVC backing, which matters when it sits on top of a woven rug rather than on the porch floor.
If you are not layering at all, the scalloped mat is the one that looks finished alone: a shaped edge reads as a decision, where a plain rectangle reads as undersized.
Check the door swing
No listing here publishes a thickness. A coir mat on top of a rug is thicker than either alone, and an outward-opening storm door, or an inward door with little clearance, can catch on it. Measure the gap under the door before ordering, and test with the rug alone before adding the mat.
One base rug, three seasons
The buffalo check base rug is the piece that stays. It works under a pumpkin mat in October, under a plain mat at Thanksgiving and under a Christmas mat in December, which makes the layered approach cheaper over a year than buying a large seasonal mat three times.

On a stoop
A 45 in rug on a 48 in stoop leaves almost no margin, and on a narrow step a layered mat is a trip hazard. There, the single scalloped mat is the better answer. The rest of the small-porch approach is on fall decor when the porch is a stoop.
Cleaning and storage
Shake coir out and let it dry before storing; stored damp, it smells and sheds. Wash the cotton rug at the end of the season and store it rolled, not folded. The seasonal mats stack flat in a single labeled bin — see labeling and inventory.
