How long Christmas lights last, and why the rated hours are the wrong number

A 50,000-hour rating works out to two hundred seasons. Something else ends the set first. Here is what, and how to plan around it.

LED lighting is sold on rated hours, and the figures are enormous. Applied to a seasonal display they are also close to meaningless, and it takes one division to see why: a set used for six weeks a year does not run out of rated hours in any timeframe a household cares about.

Something else ends the set. This page does the arithmetic that dismisses the rated-hours number, then covers the four things that genuinely retire a light set and what to do about each.

The rated-hours number, divided out

The one product here that publishes a rated life is the 150-foot Govee Permanent Pro, at a manufacturer-claimed 50,000 hours. It is worth converting into the unit you actually buy in.

The arithmetic

  1. Manufacturer claim: 50,000 rated hours
  2. A seasonal display: 6 hours a night for 40 nights = 240 hours a season
  3. 50,000 / 240 = 208 seasons
  4. Run year round at 6 hours a night: 2,190 hours a year
  5. 50,000 / 2,190 = 22.8 years

At seasonal use, a 50,000-hour rating is 208 seasons. Even run every night of the year it is about 23 years. The rating is not the binding constraint.

That is the whole point of the calculation. If rated hours were what ended a light set, nobody would ever replace one. So the useful question is not how long the LEDs last — it is what fails first.

The four things that actually end a set

  • Mechanical damage to the strand. Stapling, tensioning, being pulled off a gutter, being closed in a box under something heavy. This is the leading cause and it is entirely about how the set is fastened and stored.
  • Water in a socket. Not rain — standing water in an undrained socket, freezing and thawing. It is why the weep holes on the Wintergreen C9 are a specification worth paying for, and why a published ingress rating matters on anything permanent.
  • An unrepairable failure in a sealed set. One dead section on a set with no replaceable bulbs retires the whole strand, regardless of how much rated life the remaining LEDs have. The diagnosis order is on Christmas light troubleshooting.
  • Obsolescence, on smart sets. A set that depends on an app depends on that app continuing to exist and continuing to support it. No manufacturer publishes a support window, so we do not print one — but it is a real end-of-life mechanism that a plain string does not have.

Where the ingress rating earns its place

For anything that stays outdoors year round, the published ingress rating does more work than the rated hours. The Govee Pro track publishes IP67 with an operating range of −4 F to 140 F, which is a specification about the conditions it is built to survive rather than a claim about how long it glows. The Twinkly string publishes IP44 — rain, not immersion — which is honest and tells you it belongs where water runs off.

Planning a replacement cycle

Because failures are mechanical rather than scheduled, the sensible approach is an annual inspection rather than a replacement interval.

  • Test every set on the ground before it goes up. Faults found in the garage are cheap; faults found on a ladder are not.
  • Mark failures at take-down, not at put-up. Tape a label on the reel the moment a set misbehaves — you will not remember in eleven months.
  • Replace in April, not December. The stock is there, the weather is workable, and you are not making the decision under pressure.
  • Buy one format consistently. Mixed formats across years is how colour temperature drifts visibly across a single roofline.

Questions

How many years do LED Christmas lights last?

Long enough that the rated hours are not the limit. A published 50,000-hour rating divided by a 240-hour season is 208 seasons. What ends a set is strand damage, water in a socket, an unrepairable dead section, or app obsolescence on a smart set.

Do Christmas lights wear out in storage?

Not electrically, but mechanically yes — most strand damage and most loose bulbs happen in the box rather than on the house. Winding onto reels rather than coiling into a heap is the single biggest lever on how long a set survives.

Is IP67 better than IP44 for Christmas lights?

For anything that stays outdoors year round, yes: IP67 means dust-tight and able to survive temporary immersion, where IP44 covers rain but not standing water. For a set that comes down in January, IP44 is often sufficient.

When should I replace my Christmas lights?

On condition, not on a schedule. Retire a set with cracked insulation, a deformed or discoloured socket, a scorched plug, or a dead section on a strand with no replaceable bulbs. Do the buying in April rather than December.
