A light reel is a simple object with one specification that matters: how much strand it holds. Almost nobody publishes it. Of the five reels here, one states a capacity in feet, one states it in bulbs per spool, and three state nothing at all.
That gap is the ranking. A reel you can size before you buy is worth more than a slightly better-made one you have to guess at, because the whole point is that your strands fit.

Converting bulbs to feet
A capacity given in bulbs is only useful if you convert it using your own string’s spacing. A 200-bulb spool holds a very different length of a 4-inch-spaced mini string than of a 12-inch-spaced C9 run.
The arithmetic

- Your string: 100 bulbs at 4 in spacing = 33.3 lighted ft
- 200 bulbs / 100 per string = 2 strings per spool
- 2 strings x 33.3 ft = 66.7 ft per spool
- 3 spools x 66.7 ft = 200 ft per case
A three-spool case holds roughly 200 ft of standard 4-inch-spaced mini strand — about six 100-count strings.

Plastic spools and metal reels
This is the real dividing line in the category, and it maps directly onto what you are storing.
- Plastic spools are lighter, cheaper and completely adequate for mini strings. Wind a heavy C9 strand tightly onto one and the wheel flexes, which means the strand comes off oval next year and refuses to lie flat.
- Metal reels do not flex. They are the correct answer for C9 runs, for heavy-gauge commercial stringers, and for extension cords, which are stiffer than any light strand in freezing weather.
A 12-inch reel also gives a wider bend radius than a small spool, which is kinder to a cold jacket. If you are storing 14-gauge cord, that matters more than the capacity figure.
The feature that changes the job
The 612 Vermont set includes a clip that hangs a reel from a gutter or a ladder. That sounds like a trinket and it is the reason it is our top pick. A strand coils cleanly only if it is wound as it comes down, under slight tension, at the point it leaves the roof. Wind it at the roofline and it goes on flat. Pile it on the lawn first and wind it afterwards and it never does.

Label the reel, not the box
Write what is on the reel and where it goes on the reel itself, in permanent marker or on tape: “front eave, 60 ft, C9 warm white.” Boxes get re-used and re-labeled; the reel stays with its strand. It is thirty seconds that removes the entire guessing phase of next year’s install.

›How many feet of Christmas lights fit on a storage reel?
It depends on your string's bulb spacing. A spool rated at 200 mini bulbs holds roughly 67 feet of 4-inch-spaced strand or 200 feet of 12-inch-spaced strand. Thick C9 runs fill a spool by volume long before the bulb count is reached.
›Are metal light reels better than plastic ones?
For heavy C9 strands and extension cords, yes — plastic spools flex under a tightly wound heavy strand and the strand comes off misshapen. For mini strings, plastic is entirely adequate and lighter to lift.
›Can I use light storage reels for extension cords?
Yes, and the 12-inch metal reels are explicitly rated for it. A wide bend radius matters more with a cold, stiff 14-gauge cord than it does with a light strand.
