Icicle lights: drop count is the spec that decides the look
Bulb count tells you almost nothing. Drops per foot tells you whether an eave reads as a curtain or as a scattering.

Two icicle sets can both say “300 lights” and look completely different on the same eave. What separates them is the number of vertical drops and how far apart they sit. Most listings publish the bulb count and stop there, which is why buying icicle lights so often produces a result that does not match the photograph.

Roughly six inches between drops is the density that reads as a continuous icicle line from the street. Much wider and the eave looks sparse; much tighter and you are paying for light that overlaps. The one set here that still publishes a drop count comes in tighter than that, at 4.9 in, which is denser than it needs to be — a better error than sparse, and the only drop figure in the category you can check before you buy.
Planning a run
The arithmetic
- Measure the eave: front elevation, say 48 ft
- 48 ft / 32.8 ft per set = 1.5 sets
- Round up: 2 sets
- Check the connection limit: this listing does not publish one, so plan a feed for each set
A 48-foot front eave needs two 32.8-foot sets. Neither icicle set here publishes a connection limit any more, so treat each set as its own feed unless the box says otherwise.
The connection limit is the constraint people miss. Where it is published it is a per-set figure, it is about the first plug in the chain rather than your circuit, and it applies at the same time as your circuit budget. Neither icicle set on this page publishes one now, which makes the safe plan one outlet per set — or a clip-and-string run, where the limits are printed.
Stepped rooflines want shorter sets
If your eave line steps — a garage roof lower than the main span, a porch roof below a dormer — several shorter sets follow it far better than one long run. A single long set forced around a step either sags across the gap or leaves a visible dead length. That is the entire argument for buying a 7-foot set for each section over one 32-foot run, and it has nothing to do with quality.
If you wanted the drops to move
Icicle lights are static by design: every drop is lit at once, and the look is a frozen fringe. The format that moves is a different purchase — a header cable with clear tubes that run a chase from the top down, sold as snowfall or meteor shower lights. It hangs from the same gutter and costs more per foot, and the figures that decide it are the tube count and the length of each tube rather than the drop count. Wire color matters more here than anywhere
Icicle sets hang below the fascia, where the horizontal wire is visible against the house in daylight for six weeks. White wire against white trim disappears. White wire against dark fascia is a line you will notice every time you pull into the driveway. This is a five-second decision at the point of purchase and an unfixable one afterwards.

Divide the eave length by the set's lighted length and round up, then check whether the maker publishes a limit on how many sets you may connect end to end. Neither set here publishes one now, so assume one outlet per set unless the box says otherwise.
›Why do my icicle lights look sparser than the photo?
Almost always drop spacing. Bulb count is not the same as drop count, and two 300-bulb sets can hang very differently. Roughly six inches between drops is what reads as a continuous line.
›Can icicle lights be left up in freezing weather?
They are made for it, but check the published rating rather than the word “waterproof” in a title. The real risk on an eave is water pooling at the connectors, so keep joins up out of the gutter line.
