How many clips you actually need
Clip spacing is not bulb spacing. On a C9 run you want a clip at every bulb so each one sits upright; on a mini string you want a clip roughly every 12 to 18 inches to keep the wire from sagging between fixings.
The arithmetic
- C9 roofline: 60 ft at 12 in spacing = 60 bulbs = 60 clips
- Mini string run: 60 ft at one clip every 18 in = 40 clips
- Add 15 percent for breakage and the ones that end up in the gutter
A 60-foot C9 eave needs roughly 70 clips. One 100-pack covers it with spares.
Work out your surface before you buy
Stand at the corner of the house and look at where the lights will run. Most rooflines are not one surface end to end. A typical front elevation gives you a gutter across the main span, a bare fascia or shingle butt over the garage where there is no gutter, and a step where a dormer or porch roof meets the main run.
That is why the all-in-one clip is our default recommendation and the gutter-only S hook is our skip pick. The S hook is not badly made; it simply cannot follow a roofline that changes, and rooflines change.
Plastic clips in cold weather
Every clip here is plastic, and plastic gets brittle when it is cold. Clips installed in mild November weather and removed in a hard January frost will break at a noticeably higher rate on the way down than they did on the way up. Buy the bigger pack, budget for losses, and take them down on a milder day if you get the choice.
When they do come down, keep the clips with the strand they belong to. Clips sorted into the same bin as the lights they fit is the difference between a fifteen-minute start next year and an hour of guessing — see our storage system.

›How many light clips do I need for a 60-foot roofline?
For a C9 run at 12-inch spacing, one clip per bulb, so about 60 plus spares. For a mini string, a clip every 12 to 18 inches, so 40 to 60. Add roughly 15 percent for breakage and one 100-pack covers a typical front elevation.
›Will Christmas light clips damage my gutters or shingles?
The clips on this page are designed to hook rather than pierce, and none of them require nails or staples. The damage risk in this job is not the clip — it is stapling or nailing a strand directly to fascia or shingle, which is exactly what a clip exists to avoid.
›Can I use the same clips for C9 bulbs and mini lights?
With an all-in-one or universal clip, yes, and that is the main reason to buy one. A clip designed only for a mini wire will not hold a C9 socket upright.
