Ornament hooks are the cheapest thing in the collection and the one most likely to drop something irreplaceable. They are also bought without a thought, usually at the same time as the ornaments and usually in the wrong quantity.
Two published figures separate them — hook size and wire thickness — and almost nobody states either. That, plus how many you actually need, is the whole page.

One pack in five publishes a hook dimension and a wire thickness. On a product whose whole function is holding a weight on a branch, that is the review.

The Zanzike 100 pack wins on documentation alone: a 1.22 by 0.47 inch hook in 0.04 inch wire is a specification, and everything else here is a colour and a number. The storage box matters too, because loose hooks are the item most reliably lost between seasons.
How many a tree actually needs
The arithmetic
- Our classic ornament convention: 12 per vertical foot
- A 7.5 ft tree: 90 ornaments
- Hooks needed: 90, plus spares for the ones that bend or vanish
- A showpiece tree at 25 per foot: 188 ornaments
A classic 7.5 ft tree needs about 90 hooks. A showpiece tree needs two 100 packs, or the 300.
That is why the 300 pack earns its place despite publishing the least: on a large tree, or across several trees and wreaths, a 100 pack is three purchases rather than one. The counts themselves are on how many ornaments a tree takes.
One size does not fit a real collection
Most collections carry at least two ornament sizes, and a single-size pack handles one of them well. A hook too small will not clear a thick branch tip; one too large leaves a visible gap between the ornament and the foliage.
The Holiday Pride combo publishes a 50 large and 50 small split, the only listing here that acknowledges the problem exists. On a mixed collection it is the sensible default even though it states no dimensions.
The pieces that need a different hook
A standard wire hook holds by geometry: the ornament’s weight closes the hook onto the branch. A heavy ornament, or one on a springy outer tip, works itself off — and it is invariably the piece you would most mind losing.
The Ornament Anchor no-slip hooks exist for this, and 24 is the right number: not the whole tree, only the heirloom, the hand-made and the glass. Buy one small pack alongside a large ordinary one.
Where the hooks go in January
Loose in the bottom of an ornament box, where they tangle with everything and half are gone by next year. Two of these packs ship with a storage box for that reason, and it is worth more than it sounds.
Better still, take hooks off as the ornaments come down — a wire hook left on an ornament is the hardest thing in a divided tray and it will find the softest glass beside it. That is part of the method on how to pack ornaments.

›How many ornament hooks do I need?
One per ornament plus spares. On our convention a classic 7.5 ft tree carries about 90 ornaments, so a 100 pack just covers it; a showpiece tree at 188 needs two packs or a 300.
›What size ornament hook should I use?
Large enough to clear the branch tip and no larger, which is why a mixed collection wants a two-size pack. Only one listing we checked publishes an actual hook dimension.
›How do I stop heavy ornaments falling off the tree?
Use a no-slip hook for those specific pieces. A standard wire hook holds because the ornament’s weight closes it onto the branch, and a heavy piece on a springy outer tip defeats that. Two dozen is enough.
