Shatterproof or glass: what each one is worth on a tree
Glass passes light and breaks. Plastic bounces and survives. The published figures — count and diameter — decide how many of either a tree takes.
By Sawyer V. · Published

The ornament aisle splits in two. On one side, plastic balls sold on the promise that nothing breaks. On the other, glass sold on the way it handles light — and glass is the one thing plastic genuinely cannot imitate, because a plastic ball reflects where glass transmits.
The choice is usually made by the household rather than the tree: pets, toddlers, hard floors, and whether the tree gets knocked. But the published figures still matter, because count and diameter are what tell you how many boxes a tree takes.

How we compared them
Published count and published diameter, which together give ornaments per tree. Then material and what the listing says about construction. We do not rank on finish or color, because those are taste and the listings describe them accurately enough.
| Set | Material | Count | Diameter | Sizes in box |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sea Team, 30 | Shatterproof plastic | 30 | 70 mm and 50 mm | Two |
| XmasExp, 12 | Shatterproof plastic | 12 | 70 mm | One |
| Hungdao glass, 24 | Glass | 24 | 60 mm (2.36 in) | One |
| Hand-blown glass, 24 | Hand-blown glass | 24 | Not stated | Not stated |
Three of the four publish a diameter. The mixed-size shatterproof set is the only one that gives you two sizes in one box, which is what a tree actually wants.

How many boxes a tree takes
Ornament count is the arithmetic people skip, and it is the reason half-decorated trees happen. The site convention is 18 ornaments per vertical foot at a medium density.
The arithmetic
- A 7.5 ft tree at a medium 18 ornaments per vertical foot: 135 ornaments
- In 30-count boxes: 135 / 30 = 4.5, so 5 boxes
- In 24-count boxes: 135 / 24 = 5.6, so 6 boxes
- In 12-count boxes: 135 / 12 = 11.25, so 12 boxes
A fully dressed 7.5 ft tree is five large boxes or a dozen small ones. The 12-count sets are accent boxes, not the body of a tree — buy them for a color you cannot get in bulk.
The density scale by tree height, including sparse and heavy, is on how many ornaments for a tree.
What glass does that plastic cannot
A clear glass ball transmits light. Put it near a warm white bulb and it glows from inside; the light goes through the ball and comes out the other side. A plastic ball, however well finished, reflects light off its surface — which is why a tree of shatterproof ornaments can look slightly flat next to a tree of glass, particularly in photographs.
That is the whole aesthetic argument, and it is a real one. It is also confined to clear and translucent glass: an opaque painted glass ball and an opaque plastic ball look much the same at two feet.
What plastic does that glass cannot
Survive. A shatterproof ball dropped on a hard floor bounces; a 60 mm glass ball does not, and the fragments go under furniture where bare feet and pets find them later. There is no published drop rating on either kind, so the material is the spec.
Two households should not buy glass at all, whatever it looks like: one with a cat that climbs, and one with a toddler at ornament height. Both have their own pages on this site — cat-proofing a Christmas tree and decorating with toddlers — and both arrive at the same answer.
The answer most trees want is both
Plastic in the bottom third where it gets knocked, and where children and pets reach. Glass in the top two thirds, near the lights, where it earns its place. That gets the glow without the floor risk, and it costs less than dressing a whole tree in glass.
Whatever the mix, storage decides whether year two starts with intact ornaments: ornament storage boxes ranks the compartment sizes against these diameters, and how to store ornaments covers the method.

Good
- Two sizes is how a tree gets depth — small ornaments near the top, larger toward the bottom
- At 2.76 in the large ones fit the 3 in compartments of standard ornament boxes
Watch out
- Clear ornaments with fillers read best close up, less from across a room
- Champagne is a specific palette

Good
- Publishes a diameter, which is the figure that decides how many a tree takes
- Clear glass is the one ornament a shatterproof ball cannot imitate: it passes light rather than bouncing it
- 24 to a box is a sensible unit against most tip-count arithmetic
Watch out
- Glass, so one knock from a tail or a toddler ends it
- 60 mm is a small ball: it reads as filler rather than as a feature ornament
- No published cap or hook detail, and cheap caps are what pull off a glass ball

Watch out
- No published diameter, which is the one figure that lets you plan a tree
- No brand named in the listing
- Glass, and hand-blown glass is the thinnest kind

Questions
›Are shatterproof ornaments as good as glass?
For durability, better; for light, no. Clear glass transmits light and glows from inside, which plastic cannot do because it reflects off the surface. Opaque colors look much the same in either material.
›How many ornaments does a 7.5 ft tree need?
About 135 at a medium density of 18 per vertical foot — five 30-count boxes, six 24-count boxes, or a dozen 12-count boxes.
›What size ornament should I buy?
Most sets here are 70 mm (2.76 in) or 60 mm (2.36 in). Mixed-size boxes are worth seeking out: a tree of identical balls reads as wallpaper, and the smaller ones fill between the larger.
›Should I buy glass ornaments with a cat or a toddler?
No. Use shatterproof in the reachable lower third at minimum, and ideally throughout. Glass fragments end up under furniture where paws and bare feet find them.
