The hours, priced
The arithmetic
- Unlit tree, 7.5 ft, classic density: 750 lights

An unlit tree costs you around a day and a half of your life over a decade. That is the real price, and for many people it is worth paying.
The failure that decides it
A pre-lit tree is two products glued together: a frame that lasts fifteen years and a lighting system that lasts five to eight. When the lighting fails, the frame is still fine and you throw both away. That is the structural problem with the category and no amount of build quality fixes it.
On an unlit tree the same failure costs you one string. You unwrap it, you wrap a new one, and the tree is unaffected. The distinction is sharpest on trees with sealed LED sections, which cannot be repaired at all.
Who should buy which
Buy pre-lit if: setup time is the constraint, you are happy with warm white and will not want to change, and you are comfortable replacing the tree in six to eight years. Small households, rentals, and anyone whose tree goes up in one evening in early December.
Buy unlit if: you have opinions about color temperature or density, you want a tree that lasts as long as its branches do, or you already own light strings you like. Our top unlit pick is on the best artificial Christmas trees and the pre-lit ratios are on pre-lit Christmas trees.
If you go unlit, buy the strings properly
The one thing that makes an unlit tree worse than a pre-lit one is mismatched strings. Two “warm white” sets from different makers on the same tree is a visible difference, and it is the most common way this goes wrong.

›Do pre-lit Christmas trees last as long as unlit ones?
The frames do; the trees do not. A pre-lit tree's useful life ends when its lighting fails, typically well before the branches wear out. An unlit tree lasts as long as its frame.
›How long does it take to light an unlit Christmas tree?
About two to three hours for a 7.5-foot tree the first time, and one to two once you have a method. That is roughly 16 extra hours over a decade compared with pre-lit.
›Can you store an artificial tree with the lights still on it?
Yes, and it is the best of both approaches. A hinged tree collapses with the strings in place and goes into a bag as normal, so you pay the wrapping cost once and keep the repairability of separate strings.
