The best pre-lit Christmas wreaths, ranked on lights per inch of rim

One brand publishes both an LED count and a tip count at four diameters. Run the arithmetic and the small wreaths turn out to be less than half as densely lit as the big ones.

By Sawyer V. · Published

Yaheetech pre-lit Christmas wreath, 30 in, 110 LED, 300 tips, metal frame

The value pick is the Yaheetech 30 in: at the same diameter as the Best Choice 30 in it publishes 36 percent more tips and 10 percent more LEDs for a lower price, and it is the only wreath here that says what its frame is made of. For a standard front door the size is 24 in, which leaves a visible margin on a 36 in door. For a garage door or a wall, 36 in. For a building frontage, 60 in.

The useful thing about this category is that one brand publishes both an LED count and a PVC tip count at four diameters, which makes a controlled density ladder possible. Run it and the result is not intuitive: lighting density rises steeply with size, so the 24 in wreath carries about 0.93 LEDs per inch of rim and the 60 in carries about 1.99. The small wreaths in this field are the sparse ones.

Good

  • Thirty-six percent more tips and ten percent more LEDs than the Best Choice wreath at the same 30 in diameter, at a lower published price when we checked — the best density per dollar on this page
  • The only wreath here that publishes its frame material, and a metal structure is what stops a 30 in wreath sagging into an oval after two seasons
  • Three hundred tips at 30 in matches the 36 in Best Choice on tip count at a smaller diameter, which means it is denser per inch of rim

Watch out

  • Publishes no power source and no timer, the same gap as most of this category
  • A metal frame is heavier than a plastic one, so the hanger matters more
  • Thirty inches is still too wide for a standard 36 in door if you want a visible margin

  • Twenty-four inches is the size that fits a standard 36 in wide front door with a visible margin either side
  • Battery operated, so a door with no outlet near it is not a problem

Watch out

  • The sparsest of the four Best Choice wreaths by our arithmetic — 70 LEDs over a 75 in rim is about 0.93 LEDs per inch, against 1.99 on the 60 in version

  • A hundred and fifty LEDs over a 113 in rim is about 1.33 per inch by our arithmetic — the first point on this ladder where the wreath looks lit rather than dotted
  • Three feet across is the right scale for a surface rather than a door: a garage door, a brick wall, a gable end

#6 — skip this

Hykolity pre-lit Christmas wreath, 24 in, 30 LED, timer, battery

24 in, 30 warm white LEDs, timer, battery

Skip this here. It publishes the timer almost nothing else in this category does, and 30 LEDs on a 24 in wreath is about 0.40 lights per inch of rim by our arithmetic — less than half the density of the other 24 in wreath here and a fifth of the 60 in. If you want a lit wreath, this is accent lighting rather than illumination. It is the right buy only if the timer is the feature you came for and the light is decorative.

Buy it for the timer and the PE foliage, not for the light output. Thirty LEDs is accent lighting on a wreath this size, not illumination.

How we ranked these

Published LED count and tip count first, because together with the diameter they are the only way to compare a lit wreath on anything but a photograph. Then diameter against the surface it is going on. Then power source and timer, which decide how often you have to think about it. Four of the six wreaths here are the same product at four sizes, which is deliberate: it makes the density figures comparable rather than coincidental.

LEDs per inch of rim is ours: published LED count divided by the rim circumference (pi x diameter). It is the only figure that makes a 24 in wreath and a 60 in wreath comparable on lighting.

Source: Manufacturer listings on Amazon.com, verified via the Creators API October 2026.

The density arithmetic, and the surprise in it

An LED count on its own tells you nothing, because 70 lights on a small wreath and 70 lights on a large one are different products. Dividing by the circumference of the rim gives lights per inch, which is comparable across sizes:

The arithmetic

  1. Rim circumference = pi x diameter
  2. 24 in wreath: pi x 24 = 75.4 in of rim, 70 LEDs = 0.93 LEDs per inch
  3. 30 in wreath: pi x 30 = 94.2 in of rim, 100 LEDs = 1.06 LEDs per inch
  4. 36 in wreath: pi x 36 = 113.1 in of rim, 150 LEDs = 1.33 LEDs per inch
  5. 60 in wreath: pi x 60 = 188.5 in of rim, 375 LEDs = 1.99 LEDs per inch

Density more than doubles from the smallest to the largest, within one brand's own range. Buying the small wreath does not get you a scaled-down version of the big one — it gets you a sparser one. Our figures, from the published counts and diameters.

The practical consequence is worth stating plainly, because nothing in this category says it: if you want a small wreath that looks properly lit, a pre-lit 24 in wreath is usually the wrong purchase. An unlit wreath of the size you want plus a separate 100-count mini string gives you a density no small pre-lit wreath here reaches, and you choose the color temperature yourself. The unlit options are on the best artificial wreaths and the strings on Christmas tree lights.

Tip count, which decides what it looks like in daylight

Tip count is the figure that decides whether the wreath holds a full ring of greenery or shows its frame, and it matters most in daylight — when the lights are off and a wreath is on a door for six weeks of mornings.

The ladder here runs 100 tips at 24 in, 220 at 30 in, 300 at 36 in and 930 at 60 in. A hundred tips at 24 in is thin: that wreath looks better lit than unlit. The Yaheetech is the standout on this figure, carrying 300 tips at 30 in — the same tip count as the Best Choice 36 in on a smaller rim, which makes it the densest wreath here short of the 60 in. The same tip-count reasoning applied to trees is on tree size and tip count.

Which diameter for which surface

Wreath diameter is set by what it hangs on, not by preference. The sizing rule this site uses is on the wreath size guide, and the short version for lit wreaths is:

The arithmetic

  1. Standard 36 in front door: 24 in wreath, leaving about 6 in of margin either side
  2. Double door or a 42 in entry: 30 in wreath
  3. Garage door, brick wall, gable end: 36 in and up — a surface, not a door
  4. Building frontage, barn end, two-story gable: 60 in, which is signage rather than decoration

A 30 in wreath on a standard 36 in door leaves only about 3 in either side, which reads as wedged. The commonest mistake in this category is buying one size too big for a door and one size too small for a wall.

Battery, plug-in and the timer question

A lit wreath on a front door usually has no outlet near it, which is why battery power is common and why a published timer is worth more than a few extra LEDs. Only one wreath here publishes a timer, and it is the sparsest one — the Hykolity, at 30 LEDs.

At the other end, the 60 in wreath is plug-in, which is the only sensible power source for 375 LEDs — a battery box would not last an evening. Three of the six wreaths here publish no power source at all, which is a real gap when the answer determines whether you need an outlet, a cable route and a timer plug. The trade-off in general is on battery vs plug-in decorations.

Hanging a lit wreath, and the weight nobody mentions

A pre-lit wreath weighs more than an unlit one of the same size: there is a wiring harness, 70 to 375 LEDs and usually a battery box in it. At 24 in that is irrelevant. At 36 in and above it decides the fixing.

An over-door hook is fine for a 24 in wreath on a door. A 36 in wreath on a garage door or a wall needs a fixing into the structure, and a 60 in wreath needs two people and a plan — it catches wind like a sail, which is the failure that takes the fixing out of the wall rather than just dropping the wreath. The hanger options are on wreath hangers, the garage-door case is on Christmas garage door decorations, and the no-damage routes are on no-drill Christmas lights.

Who should skip a pre-lit wreath

Anyone who already owns a wreath they like. The lights are the part of a pre-lit wreath that fails first — a harness with 70 soldered joints in winter weather on a door that opens and closes — and when they fail, the wreath is finished, because none of these has replaceable bulbs. An unlit wreath plus a string you can replace is the repairable version of the same object, and on small sizes it is also the brighter one.

The case for pre-lit is convenience and tidiness: no visible string, no wrapping, one object out of one box. That is a real benefit on a door you look at every day. It is just worth knowing that you are buying a consumable. The same argument for trees, where it is even more consequential, is on pre-lit vs unlit.

The bow, which is half of what you are buying

Four of the six wreaths here publish a bow, and on two of them the bow is lit. That is worth noticing, because a bow is a large proportion of a wreath’s visual mass and it is the component most likely to date the whole thing — a wreath with a wired red velvet bow is a traditional wreath whatever the foliage is doing.

The practical question is whether it comes off. A bow attached with a wire tie can be removed, replaced or re-tied, which means one wreath can serve several schemes across years and can go up as plain greenery for January. A bow that is glued, or one with the light harness running through it, cannot. No listing on this page says which it is, so if flexibility matters, assume the worst and buy the wreath for the bow it already has.

If you do want to change it, a replacement bow is cheap and the sizing is published — ribbon width against wreath diameter, and yardage per bow, is on Christmas ribbon and bows and how to make a wreath bow. A bow is also the part of a wreath that reliably survives storage worst, so it is worth taking off before the wreath goes into a container either way.

Where the battery box goes, and what fails first

Three of the wreaths here are battery powered and none of them publishes where the battery box sits or how big it is. In practice it hangs on the back of the frame, which creates two problems on a front door: it holds the wreath off the door face so the wreath sits proud and swings, and it is the first thing to get crushed when the door closes against a storm door.

The fix is to find the box before you hang the wreath and to seat it at the bottom of the frame rather than the middle, so the weight hangs below the hanger rather than levering the wreath away from the door. On a door with a storm door in front of it, check the clearance with the wreath in place and the box where it will actually live, because a pre-lit wreath is thicker than an unlit one by exactly that box.

As for what fails: the harness, essentially always. Seventy to 375 soldered joints on a door that opens and closes, in winter weather, with a battery box flexing against the frame. None of these wreaths has a replaceable bulb, so the failure is terminal — which is the honest case for treating a pre-lit wreath as a consumable, and the reason the storage advice on how to store a wreath matters more here than it does for an unlit one. Take the batteries out before it goes away, every year.

Questions

›What size pre-lit wreath fits a front door?

Twenty-four inches on a standard 36 in door, which leaves about 6 in of margin either side. A 30 in wreath on the same door leaves only about 3 in and reads as wedged. Thirty-six inches and up belongs on a surface — a garage door, a wall, a gable — rather than on a door.

›How many lights should a pre-lit wreath have?

Judge it per inch of rim rather than in total. Divide the LED count by the circumference (pi x diameter): the wreaths on this page run from 0.40 to 1.99 LEDs per inch. Below about 1.0 the wreath reads as dotted rather than lit, which on this page means most of the 24 in options.

›Are pre-lit wreaths worth it?

For convenience on a door you see daily, yes — one object, no visible string, nothing to wrap. But the lights are a consumable: none of these has replaceable bulbs, so when the harness fails the wreath is finished. At small diameters an unlit wreath plus a 100-count string is both brighter and repairable.

›What does PVC tip count mean on a wreath?

The number of individual foliage tips attached to the frame. It decides whether the wreath looks like a full ring of greenery or shows its frame, and it matters most in daylight with the lights off. The wreaths here run 100 tips at 24 in up to 930 at 60 in.

›Do pre-lit wreaths have timers?

Rarely, and it is the figure worth looking for on a battery wreath. One of the six wreaths on this page publishes a timer; three publish no power source at all. Without a timer, a battery wreath on a front door gets switched by hand twice a day.
