The best vacuum storage bags, for the soft half of the holiday bins

Tree skirts, stockings, tablecloths and throws take up half a storage shelf for eleven months. A vacuum bag shrinks them. Seal, size and a pump decide which pack.

Labeled boxes lined up on storage shelving

Every holiday has a soft side: the tree skirt, the stockings, the Thanksgiving tablecloth, the Christmas throws, the Halloween costumes. They are light but bulky, and they fill totes that could hold ornaments. A vacuum bag pulls the air out and shrinks them to a slab.

It is the right tool for fabric and the wrong one for almost everything else on this hub, so we start with what not to put in one. Five below, one to skip.

How we ranked these

Seal first, because a bag that creeps back up over eleven months saves nothing. Then published size and capacity, whether a pump comes in the box, and pack count.

What to vacuum-pack, and what not to

Vacuum bags are for soft fabric that springs back: tree skirts, stockings, tablecloths, napkins, throws, costumes and fabric door covers. They are not for anything with a shape to keep. Do not vacuum-pack an artificial wreath or garland — crushed tips are how a wreath goes flat; see how to store a wreath. Do not vacuum-pack ornaments, light strands or anything with a frame. The tree has its own method, on how to store an artificial tree.

How much space a bag saves

The arithmetic

  1. TAILI cube: 31 x 40 x 15 in = 18,600 cu in = 10.8 cu ft
  2. A 27 gal tote = 3.6 cu ft
  3. 10.8 / 3.6 = 3 totes' worth, before compression
  4. At the 80% the listings claim: 10.8 x 0.2 = 2.2 cu ft

One TAILI cube holds about three totes' worth of bulky linens uncompressed. Compressed at the rate the listings claim, it shrinks to about 2.2 cu ft — less than a single tote.

The seal is the spec

Vacuum bags fail slowly. A bag that holds for a week can creep back up over eleven months in an attic, and a bag full of air saves nothing. The Amazon Basics listing gives the most sealing detail — a double-zip seal and a triple-seal valve — which is why it ranks first. For any bag, run the zip slider twice, check the valve cap, and pump again after a week if the bag has softened.

Pump or vacuum

Three packs here include a hand pump. The TAILI cubes do not, so you will need a vacuum with a hose. A hand pump is slower but works anywhere, which helps when the bins live in the attic and the vacuum lives downstairs. The MattEasy is the best-specified flat bag, with its size and film both published, and the jumbo 6 pack tells you what fits: 4 pillows or a queen bedding set per bag.

Why SpaceAid is the skip

The SpaceAid pack has three X-Large bags, no dimensions and no pump stated. Every other pack here has six bags and publishes more.

Where they fit in the system

Vacuum bags go on the shelf beside the totes. The whole system is on holiday storage ideas, the choice of container on bins vs bags vs totes, and the labels on labeling and inventory — a flat vacuum bag looks like every other one.

Questions

Can you vacuum-seal Christmas decorations?

Only the soft ones: tree skirts, stockings, table linens, throws and costumes. Never wreaths, garland, ornaments or lights — compression crushes tips and bends frames.

Do vacuum storage bags lose their seal?

Some do, slowly. Run the zip twice, cap the valve, and pump again after a week if the bag has softened. The Amazon Basics bags publish the most sealing detail here.

Do I need a vacuum for vacuum bags?

Not with a pack that includes a hand pump; three here do. The TAILI cubes need a vacuum hose.

How much space do vacuum bags save?

The listings that publish a figure claim up to 80%. At that rate a TAILI cube’s 10.8 cu ft of linens shrinks to about 2.2 cu ft, less than one 27 gal tote.
