How long fall decorations really last outdoors
Sun, rain and a covered porch versus an exposed one. What fails first, what is a material problem, and the figures nobody publishes.

Fall decor has the longest exposure of any season on this site. A Christmas display is up for five or six weeks in winter; a fall porch goes out in early September and often stays until Thanksgiving, which is three months of sun, rain and temperature swing on materials that were chosen for how they photograph.
This page is about what actually fails in that time, and it comes with a caveat we will state up front: nobody publishes a weathering figure for a decorative wreath. What can be compared is material, construction and where the piece is placed, and those three explain almost every failure.

What fails, in order
- Colour, first and worst. Direct sun is what fades a fall wreath, and the oranges and reds that make the season go first. A wreath on a south-facing door with no overhang is in the hardest position available.
- Glue joints, second. Applied trim — berries, pinecones, small gourds — is attached with adhesive that goes through a wet-dry cycle every time it rains. Pieces come off, and they come off from the bottom of the wreath first.
- Foam and paper, immediately. Anything paper-based or unsealed foam is an indoor product regardless of what the listing photograph shows.
- Cords and connections, quietly. Not a look problem — a specification problem. A lit piece outdoors needs a cord rated for it.

Resin and metal are the materials that tolerate full exposure. Foliage wreaths with applied trim are covered-position pieces, whatever the listing photograph suggests.

Placement does more than material
The same wreath on two different doors has two different lifespans, and the variable is the overhang. A door under a deep porch roof gets neither direct sun for most of the day nor rain driven straight at it. A door on a flat elevation facing south-west gets both.

A fall porch is exposed for roughly twice as long as a Christmas display, in weather that includes September sun. Buy for the exposure, not the photograph.
If the door is exposed, the practical moves are to choose a wreath with less applied trim, to accept that it is a two-or-three-season piece rather than a decade one, or to move the seasonal statement off the door and onto lanterns and lit pieces that are made of materials which do not mind. Lit pieces have a second failure mode
A wreath that fades is disappointing. A lit piece with an unsuitable cord is a different category of problem, and it is the one place in fall decor where a published specification genuinely tells you something.

Storage is half of durability
A wreath that survives three months outdoors and is then crushed flat in a bin for nine has not lasted a season either. This is the argument for the collapsible lit wreath: it folds for storage, which removes the box-size problem entirely, and for a piece that will be stored more months than it is displayed, that is worth as much as the material.

›How long do artificial fall wreaths last outside?
It depends almost entirely on exposure, and no manufacturer publishes a figure. A wreath on a covered north-facing door survives far longer than the same wreath on an exposed south-west elevation, where the reds and oranges fade first and the applied trim comes loose after repeated wet-dry cycles.
›Can fall decorations stay out in the rain?
Resin and metal pieces are fine. Foliage wreaths with glued trim are covered-position items, and anything paper-based or unsealed foam is an indoor product no matter what the listing photograph shows.
›Why does my fall wreath lose berries and pinecones?
Applied trim is attached with adhesive that goes through a wet-dry cycle with every rainfall, and gravity means the bottom of the wreath sheds first. Less applied trim means fewer things to lose.
›Is a lit outdoor decoration safe to leave out for months?
Only if its cord is rated for it. Look for a stated safety listing and a waterproof cord rather than the phrase “for outdoor use” in a title. It is the one specification in fall decor that carries real information.
