The best porch flag pole kits, ranked on how the flag flies

A flag wrapped round its pole is the most common sight on American porches. The kits worth buying publish their answer to it.

By Sawyer V. · Published

Flag bunting strung along a wooden porch rail

A house-mounted flag is the one piece of seasonal decor that many homes fly all year and every home flies from Memorial Day to the Fourth of July. The kit is simple — a bracket, a pole, a flag — and it is the simplicity that hides the one problem every kit has to solve: wind wraps the flag around the pole.

Five kits below, ranked on pole construction, flag construction and whether they publish an answer to wrapping.

Good

  • Stainless steel at a published 1 in diameter — the thickness that stops a pole bowing in wind
  • Two rotating rings let the flag swing around the pole instead of wrapping itself round it

Watch out

  • The bracket's angle positions are not published
  • Embroidered flags are heavier, so they hang limp in light air

Good

  • Nylon is the lightest common flag fabric, so it lifts and flies in a breeze that leaves heavier flags hanging
  • Stainless pole and alloy fittings resist rust

Watch out

  • Pole diameter not published
  • Nylon is thinner than embroidered cotton or polyester and wears faster in constant wind

How we ranked these

Anti-wrap design first, then pole material, then flag construction and bracket options. Every figure is one the listing publishes.

The wrapping problem

A flag on a fixed pole swings with the wind until the wind changes, and then it wraps itself around the pole and stays there. Two published answers exist here: rotating rings that let the flag swing around the pole, on the Barcetine, and a pole that spins, on the 2-position kit. Our skip publishes neither.

Pole length and clearance

The arithmetic

  1. 3 x 5 ft flag on a 6 ft pole: 6 - 5 = 1 ft of bare pole at the bracket
  2. At 45°, a 6 ft pole reaches 6 x 0.71 = 4.2 ft out and 4.2 ft up
  3. The 3 ft flag hangs below the pole
  4. Bracket at 7 ft: pole tip at 11.2 ft, flag's lowest corner around 8 ft

Mounted at about 7 ft on a 45° bracket, a 3 x 5 flag clears a doorway comfortably. Under a low porch roof, set the bracket steeper or shorten an adjustable pole.

Embroidered, nylon or printed

Embroidered stars and sewn stripes are the durable construction, and they are heavy. Nylon, on the Quarut, is light enough to fly in a breeze that leaves a heavier flag hanging, and wears faster in constant wind. Printed polyester fades soonest in full sun. Choose for your porch: sheltered and still suits nylon; open and windy suits embroidered.

One pole, several flags

The Yeesun pole ships without a flag and adjusts in length, which suits a house that flies seasonal or state flags as well as the US flag. The small-scale version — garden flags on a stand — is on seasonal garden flags, and the rest of the Fourth of July porch on Fourth of July bunting.

Questions

What size flag pole for a 3 x 5 flag?

A 6 ft pole, which every kit here uses. It leaves about a foot of bare pole at the bracket, so the flag clears the wall.

How do you stop a flag wrapping around the pole?

Rotating rings that let the flag swing around the pole, or a spinning pole. Two kits here publish one or the other; our skip publishes neither.

Embroidered or printed flag?

Embroidered stars and sewn stripes last longest outdoors but are heavy. Nylon flies in lighter wind. Printed polyester fades fastest in sun.

Does a flag need to be lit at night?

The US Flag Code asks that a flag flown after dark be illuminated. A small spotlight aimed at it is enough.
