How high a pole reaches
The arithmetic
- Assume you hold the pole's base at about 5 ft
- 11 ft pole: 5 + 11 = about 16 ft
- 12 ft pole: about 17 ft
- 30 ft pole: about 35 ft
An 11 ft clip pole reaches a single-story gutter comfortably with feet on the ground. For a second-story eave you need the long hook pole — and clips already in place for it to hook onto.
Measure your gutter height before choosing. The rake and eave arithmetic for a two-story frontage is on lighting a two-story house.
Clip poles and hook poles
The No Ladder and Ultra XT push clips onto the roofline and release them with a trigger. The EXTEND-A-REACH and Niuyhe have utility hooks: they lift a string onto hooks or clips that are already there. The first kind installs a roofline; the second re-hangs one.
The Ultra XT names shingles and eaves as well as gutters — the spec that tells you it works on a roof without gutters — though it no longer publishes a thickness limit for either, so check the clip against your own shingle. Clip types and what fits where are on Christmas light clips.
25 clips is a start
Both clip poles include 25 clips. At one clip per foot, that is 25 ft of roofline — a front door’s worth, not a house. Buy clips to match the run. And if you would rather not hang a roofline every year at all, see permanent Christmas lights and no-drill options.

›Can you hang Christmas lights without a ladder?
On a single-story house, yes: an 11 ft clip pole held at about 5 ft reaches roughly 16 ft, enough for most gutters. It pushes clips on and releases them with a trigger.
›How long a light-hanging pole do I need?
Your gutter height minus about 5 ft for where you hold the pole. 11 ft suits a single-story house; a second story needs a 30 ft hook pole and clips already in place.
›Do light poles work on roofs without gutters?
One pole here names shingles and eaves as well as gutters, though without publishing a thickness limit for either. Check the clip against your own shingle first.
›Is it safe to use a light pole near power lines?
No. Keep any pole well clear of overhead lines, including the service drop to the house, and look up before extending it.
