Light clips or adhesive hooks: what holds, and what leaves no mark
A clip hooks onto something structural. A strip sticks to a surface. The choice is usually made for you by what you are allowed to put a hole in.
By Sawyer V. · Published

Every string of outdoor lights has to attach to the house somehow, and there are only two honest ways to do it without a drill: hook onto something that is already there, or stick to something that is already there. Clips do the first. Adhesive strips do the second.
Clips hold better and cost nothing in surface risk when the house has a gutter or a shingle edge to grip. Adhesive is the answer when it does not — a stucco soffit, a painted porch beam, a vinyl column, a rented front. Neither is a substitute for the other.

How we compared them
Published piece count first, because a run is priced per foot in clips. Then what surfaces the listing says it fits. Then what it leaves behind, and what it does not publish — which in adhesive is always the weight rating.
| Product | Fixing | Pieces | Surfaces | Weight rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All-in-one clips | Hook | 100 | Gutter and shingle | Not stated |
| Adams Mighty Clip | Hook | 100 | Gutter, shingle, ridge | Not stated |
| Command clips, 40 | Adhesive | 40 clips, 48 strips | Smooth painted and finished | Not stated |
| Command rope clips, 12 | Adhesive | 12 hooks, 16 strips | Smooth painted and finished | Not stated |
Not one of the four publishes a weight rating. On hook clips that matters little — the string weighs almost nothing and the hook is mechanical. On adhesive it is the figure you most want and never get.

How many fixings a front takes
The arithmetic
- Example front: 40 ft of gutter plus a 12 ft porch beam
- Clips every 12 in on the gutter: 40 clips
- Adhesive hooks every 12 in on the beam: 12 hooks
- A 100-clip pack covers the gutter twice over; a 12-hook adhesive pack covers the beam exactly once, with no spares
Buy hook clips by the hundred and adhesive by the job. The adhesive packs here are sized for one feature, not a whole house.
Spacing is a judgement call, not a spec. Twelve inches is close enough that a C9 string hangs as a straight line; at 24 in it scallops between clips, which reads as sloppy from the street. Tighter spacing costs clips and buys the look.
The surface decides, not the preference
A gutter clip needs a gutter lip. A shingle tab clip needs an exposed shingle edge. If the roof has neither — a flat fascia, a boxed soffit, a stucco overhang — there is nothing for a hook to grab, and that is where adhesive earns its place. The same goes for anything vertical: columns, door surrounds, window frames and railings are all adhesive or nothing, because a hook has no edge to catch.
Adhesive has its own surface rules, and they are stricter than the listings admit. It wants smooth, clean, dry and above freezing when applied. Chalky paint, dusty stucco and a cold damp soffit are all failure modes, and the failure happens in the first gale, usually at night. The no-drill alternatives to both approaches — magnets, over-door hooks, freestanding stakes — are on no-drill Christmas lights.
What each one leaves behind
A hook clip leaves nothing, because it never touched the finish — it comes off the gutter in January with the string still in it, which is also why clips are worth storing on a reel rather than in a bag. Adhesive leaves either nothing or a mark, depending entirely on whether it is pulled correctly: straight down on the tab, slowly. Pulled out and away, it takes paint.
That is the real trade. Clips are better hardware; adhesive is the only hardware allowed on most of the interesting surfaces. Storage for both, and for the strings they hold, is on how to store Christmas lights.
Who should buy which
Buy hook clips for the roofline. Two pack sizes cover most houses, they cost less per fixing, they hold in wind, and they are reusable for years. Match the clip to what your roof edge actually offers — gutter lip, shingle tab, or ridge.
Buy adhesive for columns, beams, door surrounds, window frames, and any rented surface. Buy more strips than hooks, apply them early, and keep them off anything the wind gets a grip on. Renting brings its own constraints, which we work through on Christmas decorations for renters.

Good
- One SKU covers both mounting surfaces, which is what stops the mid-install trip to the store
- Takes C9 bulbs and mini strings, so a mixed run uses one clip type
Watch out
- Plastic clips are a consumable — expect to lose some to cold-weather brittleness

Good
- The widest published bulb compatibility list of any clip here
- A long-standing product line, so replacements are easy to find next year
Watch out
- Wide compatibility means it grips a mini string less tightly than a mini-specific clip

#3 — Enough adhesive clips for a whole front
Command outdoor light clips, 40 clips and 48 strips

The pack size that actually finishes a front. Still adhesive, so keep it off anything that has to hold in wind.

Good
- Forty clips covers a porch, a door surround and a window without a second order
- Clear rather than white, which disappears on most trim
- Eight spare strips for forty clips
Watch out
- No published weight rating or temperature range, same as every adhesive clip
- Adhesive on a textured or chalky surface is a coin toss, and the listing says nothing about surface prep

#4 — A surface you are not allowed to make a hole in
Command outdoor rope light clips, 12 hooks and 16 strips
12 hooks, 16 weather-resistant strips, damage-free
6.3

The renter's fixing. Buy it for the surfaces you cannot clip to, not for the whole run.

Good
- Leaves no hole, which on a rented porch or a painted soffit is the only thing that matters
- Publishes both the hook count and the strip count, so you know how many spares you have
- Comes off at the end of the season instead of staying up all year
Watch out
- No published weight rating, and adhesive is the fixing most likely to let go in a gale
- No published temperature range — adhesives are at their worst on a cold, damp surface
- Sixteen strips for twelve hooks means four re-sticks, and that is the whole budget

Questions
›Do Command hooks hold Christmas lights outside?
On a smooth, clean, dry surface applied above freezing and left to cure, yes — a string of LEDs weighs very little. On chalky paint, dusty stucco or a cold damp soffit, expect failures. No adhesive clip in this field publishes a weight rating.
›How many light clips do I need?
One every 12 inches for a line that hangs straight. A 40 ft gutter takes about 40 clips, so a 100-pack covers most fronts with spares.
›Which is better, light clips or adhesive hooks?
Clips, wherever there is a gutter lip or shingle edge to hook onto: better holding, lower cost per fixing, reusable. Adhesive is for the surfaces a clip cannot grip at all.
›Will adhesive hooks damage paint?
Not if removed correctly — pull the tab straight down, slowly. Pulled outward, they can lift paint, and that risk is the reason to use hook clips anywhere you have the choice.
