Window candles are the quietest outdoor decoration there is and among the most effective, because they light every opening on the front of the house rather than one feature. They are also the category where the buying mistake is obvious from the street: a facade lit with two different candles bought a year apart.
Count the windows, buy the set that covers them in one order, and insist on a timer. That is the whole method, and the ranking follows from it.

How many a facade actually needs
The arithmetic
- Count the windows visible from the street on the ground floor
- Add upper-floor windows only if you will actually reach them
- A typical frontage: 3 ground floor + 3 upper = 6
- A double-fronted house: 4 + 4, plus two door sidelights = 10
Most houses need 6 to 10. Buying a 4-pack for a 6-window frontage is the mistake this category is built on.
One candle per window, centred, at the same height in every opening. Two candles in a wide window reads as a decision; one candle in some windows and none in others reads as running out.
Why the timer is the specification that matters
Every candle here has a timer, and that is not a coincidence — without one the format does not work. A battery candle switched by hand runs until somebody remembers, which in practice means it either burns out early or spends half the season off.

›Do window candles need a timer?
Effectively yes. A battery candle switched by hand runs until somebody remembers, so it either burns out early or spends half the season off. The best sets publish the actual cycle.
›How long do the batteries last?
