Battery or plug-in: which decoration goes where

The decision is made by the outlet, not by preference. Here is how to tell which pieces genuinely need to be cordless, and what that costs you.

Nobody prefers batteries. They are chosen because a front door has no outlet behind it, a window is nowhere near a socket, or a mantel would need a cord run across a room. The right question is not which format is better — it is which specific pieces in your display genuinely have no route to a plug.

Answer that first, then buy accordingly, because the two formats differ in brightness and in run time, and the gap is bigger than the product photos suggest.

The pattern is consistent: battery for pieces mounted on something that moves or has no wall behind it, plug-in for everything with a route to a socket.

What choosing battery actually costs you

Two things, and only one of them is obvious.

Light count. Battery pieces carry fewer LEDs, because the cell has to drive them. A battery garland publishes 50 LEDs over 9 ft against 100 on the plug-in equivalent of the same length. That is half the light on the same foliage, and it is visible.

The arithmetic

  1. Battery garland: 50 LEDs over 9 ft = 5.6 lights per foot
  2. Plug-in garland: 100 LEDs over 9 ft = 11.1 lights per foot
  3. 11.1 / 5.6 = 2.0

Attention. A plug-in piece on a timer runs itself for six weeks. A battery piece without a timer runs until somebody remembers, which in practice means it either burns out early or spends half the season switched off. This is the reason a built-in timer is not a minor feature on a battery product — it is the feature that makes the format work at all.

The timer is the real decision

On a battery piece, an integrated timer converts an unusable format into a workable one: it runs for a set window each evening and shuts off, which multiplies the useful life of a set of cells by the ratio of the day it is not running. Both the 9 ft battery garland and the National range’s battery-operated Norwood Fir wreath are bought for exactly this reason — the wreath in particular, because multicolor on a front door without a cord down the frame is otherwise not available.

On the plug-in side the timer is an external accessory and it does a bigger job, because it is switching an entire circuit rather than one decoration. Mixing the two without it looking mixed

A display that mixes formats can look inconsistent for one avoidable reason: colour temperature. Warm white from one maker and warm white from another are frequently not the same warm white, and the difference is far more obvious between a wreath and the garland beside it than it is across a whole roofline.

The short answer

Plug in everything that can reach a socket, put the whole plug-in half on one timer, and reserve battery for the specific pieces that physically cannot be corded — the exterior face of a door, a window sill, a mantel in a room with no convenient outlet. Questions

Are battery Christmas lights bright enough?

For a wreath or a window they are fine; for a run that has to hold its own next to plug-in lighting they are noticeably dimmer, because battery pieces carry fewer LEDs. A 9 ft battery garland publishes 50 LEDs against 100 on the plug-in version of the same length.

How long do batteries last in a pre-lit wreath?

Longer with a timer and shorter in the cold, and we will not print an hours figure because it depends on the cells you fit and the temperature they sit at. Buy a piece with an integrated timer — that single feature does more for run time than any brand of battery.

Can I put a plug-in wreath on an exterior door?

Only if there is a route for the cord that does not stop the door closing on it. Where there is not, battery is the answer, which is precisely the situation it exists for.

Do I need an outdoor timer if my lights already have one built in?

Not for that piece. An external timer earns its place when it is switching several things at once — a porch display with a wreath, a garland and a string all on one outlet is one decision instead of three.
