The single thing that decides how long a real Christmas tree lasts is whether its stand ever runs dry. Watering it means lying on the floor, reaching under the lowest branches with a jug, and spilling on the tree skirt. So people water less than they should.

How much a real tree drinks
A widely published rule of thumb, from the National Christmas Tree Association, is that a fresh tree can take up to about a quart of water a day for each inch of trunk diameter.
The arithmetic

A typical 7 ft tree can drink about a gallon a day in its first week — more than many stands hold. That is why the stand runs dry overnight, and why a waterer that makes topping up easy matters.

Reach and tube
The 59 in funnel is the longest here, for a big, full tree whose stand you cannot see. The 39 in funnel suits a 7 to 7.5 ft tree and breaks into three sections for storage. The 45 in metal funnel uses a bendable stainless pipe, which does not kink or sag and holds its shape around the trunk — the flexible ones need tying.
Hide the tube, save the skirt
Run the tube down the back of the trunk, where the branches hide it, and let the funnel sit among the lower branches. A common rule of thumb is up to about a quart a day per inch of trunk diameter — around a gallon a day for a 4 in trunk, especially in the first week.
›What happens if the tree stand runs dry?
The cut end can seal over, and the tree may stop drinking even after you refill it. A dry tree also drops needles faster and is a greater fire risk.
