Skirt or collar: what each one actually hides
A skirt covers the floor. A collar covers the stand. They solve different problems, and the room usually decides which you need.

These get presented as two styles of one product, one traditional and one modern. They are not. A skirt is a flat covering that spreads across the floor; a collar is a vertical ring standing around the base. What they conceal differs, and so does everything downstream.

The cord row decides it for a lot of rooms. If the tree is not beside an outlet, a skirt hides the run and a collar does not.

The argument nobody makes: the cord
A tree is rarely beside an outlet, so a cord crosses some floor. A skirt lies over it and the problem disappears; a collar is a ring, and the cord emerges from under it and continues across the room in full view.
If the tree is more than a couple of feet from a socket, that alone is a reasonable case for a skirt — or for accepting a visible cord and routing it along a skirting rather than diagonally across the room.
Presents change the arithmetic

A collar takes floor area away from presents; a skirt gives them a surface. In a small room that is a real difference.
This is the practical reason skirts persist despite collars being the current look. If the tree is the centre of a present pile, a skirt does a job a ring physically cannot.
Pets, toddlers and stability
A skirt is fabric attached to nothing, sitting under a top-heavy object. Pulled hard enough it moves, and the tree may follow. A rigid collar is not attached either, but it does not drag, and it puts a physical ring between a crawling child and the stand.
Neither is a safety device and neither substitutes for securing a tree properly. But if the room has a determined cat in it, the rigid plastic ring is the less eventful option.
Storage is the tiebreaker
A skirt folds to almost nothing and lives in a tote with the textiles. A rigid collar is a 28 or 31 inch circle that cannot be reduced, occupying a full shelf depth for eleven months.
One collar gets around that: the fabric hexagon folds like a skirt while still standing up like a collar. The multi-panel metal collar that used to share this paragraph is discontinued and nothing rigid replaces it. If storage is your binding constraint and you still want the collar look, that is the one — the volume method is on how much storage space you need.

Neither is better; they hide different things. A collar conceals the stand vertically and leaves a real tree’s reservoir reachable. A skirt covers the floor, the cord and the stand feet, and gives presents a surface.
›Can you put presents under a tree with a collar?
Beside it rather than under it. A 31-inch collar occupies about 5 square feet that presents cannot use, which matters in a small room.
›Which is better for a real tree?
A collar, provided it is sized to leave the reservoir reachable and made of plastic or metal. A skirt has to be lifted or folded back every time the tree is watered.
›Do tree collars store badly?
