Christmas decorations with a toddler in the house
A toddler can reach about 30 inches up a tree. Everything in that band needs to be unbreakable, and the tree itself needs to not come down.
By Sawyer V. · Published

A toddler does not ruin Christmas decorating. It changes exactly two things: what goes in the bottom two and a half feet of the tree, and whether the tree can be pulled over. Everything above that band can be as fragile as you like.
This is not a page about child-proofing a house. It is four purchases that let the tree stay up and stay interesting, worked out from a reach figure rather than from worry.
Wreath & Watt earns a commission on qualifying purchases made through the Amazon links on this page. It costs you nothing and it does not change the order of the picks — here is exactly how we are funded.
What to look for
An anti-tip fixing that does not need a drill. A pulled tree is the only genuinely dangerous failure here, and a lit tree with water in the stand makes it worse. An adhesive anchor kit costs less than a wreath.
Shatterproof in the reach band, in more than one size. A mixed box gives you large balls for the visible lower branches and small ones to fill, without a single piece of glass in the zone that gets grabbed.
A collar rather than a skirt. A skirt is a fabric sheet a toddler can pull, and pulling the skirt moves the stand. A rigid collar is a ring that stays where it is put.
Felt rather than knitted stockings. Felt does not snag, does not unravel when it is pulled off the mantel, and survives being dragged along a floor.
| Piece | Job | Published figures |
|---|---|---|
| Anti-tip anchor kit | Stops the tree being pulled over | 12 pieces, peel-and-stick, no drilling; load rating not stated |
| Shatterproof ornaments | Fills the reach band unbreakably | 30 count: 25 at 70 mm, 5 at 50 mm |
| Tree collar | Covers the stand without fabric to pull | 28 in diameter, rigid plastic |
| Felt stockings | Survives being pulled down | 4 pack, 18 in, felt with a hanging loop |
The anchor kit does not publish a load rating, which is the figure you would most want. Treat it as insurance against a pull, not against a climb.

The reach band, and what goes in it
The useful number is not the child's height; it is how high they can reach up a tree while standing, which is roughly height plus an arm.
The arithmetic
- A two-year-old is roughly 34 in tall (an assumption — use your own)
- Reach above the head while standing: about 8 in
- Reach with a pull on a branch, which bends the tree down: add another 6 in
- Practical reach band: the bottom 30 in of a tree, and a little more
Treat the bottom 30 inches as a no-glass zone. On a 6.5 ft tree that is about the lowest 38 percent of the height, which is also the part visible from a sofa — so it needs to look decorated, not empty.
That is the whole strategy: shatterproof at the bottom, anything you like at the top. The glass-against-plastic comparison, including why glass earns its place higher up, is on shatterproof or glass.
Anchoring, and why it matters more than breakage
A shattered bauble is a mess. A toppled tree is a real hazard: it brings lights, water and several kilos of metal stand with it. Anchoring is the one thing on this page that is about safety rather than tidiness.
Two fixings do it. An adhesive anchor kit ties the trunk to the wall behind — the one here is 12 pieces, peel-and-stick, sold for exactly this and for cats. Or, if the tree is in front of a window, run a line from the leader to a curtain-rod bracket. The full pet version of this argument, with more anchoring detail, is on cat-proofing a Christmas tree.
A real tree adds a water problem
A real tree stand holds a gallon or more of water at exactly toddler height, and the water is not clean after a week. A collar helps by covering the reservoir; a watering funnel means the lid stays on rather than being lifted twice a day. Both are on Christmas tree waterers and skirt or collar.
If that sounds like more management than you want in the first year with a toddler, an artificial tree removes the problem entirely: the reasoning either way is on real or artificial.
What to buy again next year
The anchor kit and the collar are one-time purchases that carry across years. Shatterproof ornaments accumulate: a second 30-count box next year fills the band properly on a bigger tree. Felt stockings last, and they wash.
Nothing on this page has to be undone when the toddler grows up, which is the test of a good adjustment: the collar is still a collar, the ornaments still fill the bottom of the tree, and the anchor stays in place for the cat.

12 piece no-drill adhesive anti-tip anchor set

Good
- Solves the actual failure mode: a cat climbing the trunk and the whole tree going over
- No-drill adhesive, which matters in a rental
- Twelve pieces is enough for several anchor points and spares
Watch out
- No load rating published, so treat it as insurance rather than a rated tie-down

25 at 70 mm plus 5 at 50 mm
9.5

- At 2.76 in the large ones fit the 3 in compartments of standard ornament boxes
Watch out
- Clear ornaments with fillers read best close up, less from across a room
- Champagne is a specific palette

Black Duck Brand embroidered felt stockings, set of 4, 18 in

Questions
›How do you toddler-proof a Christmas tree?
Two changes: anchor the trunk to the wall so it cannot be pulled over, and keep the bottom 30 inches free of glass. Everything above that band can be as fragile as you like.
›How high can a toddler reach up a Christmas tree?
About 30 inches for a two-year-old — height plus an arm, plus the extra a pulled branch gives them. That is the band to fill with shatterproof ornaments.
›Is a tree collar better than a skirt with young children?
Yes. A skirt is a fabric sheet that can be pulled, and pulling it shifts the stand. A rigid collar stays where it is put and covers a real tree's water reservoir.
›Do I need to anchor an artificial tree?
If a toddler or a cat can reach it, yes. An adhesive 12-piece anchor kit needs no drilling and costs less than a wreath; a toppled tree brings lights and a metal stand down with it.
