A stocking holder is bought for the figure on the front and it fails or succeeds entirely on the block underneath. On the morning it matters the stocking is full, and a holder that looked charming in November is on the hearth with the stocking under it.
Three things decide it: whether the base is weighted, whether it protects the mantel, and whether you bought enough in one design. None of these listings publishes a weight limit, which is the first thing worth knowing.

The SINTENILL bronze set takes the top spot because it is the only one publishing both halves of the problem: a weighted base for the load and a non-scratch, low-profile foot for the mantel. Most sets solve one and ignore the other.
Weighted or lightweight, and when light is right
Weighted is the default and the correct choice for a mantel carrying filled stockings. There is one real exception: a narrow shelf. A heavy flat block needs depth to sit on, and on a shallow mantel it overhangs, which is worse than being light.
The 365park lightweight set exists for exactly that case, and the trade should be understood rather than discovered: lighter holders sit better on a narrow shelf and hold less, and the listing does not say how much less.

The pad is not a detail
A metal base dragged across a painted or veneered mantel leaves a mark that does not come out, and a stocking being filled and emptied means the holder gets moved repeatedly. The non-slip pad set is the one to choose if the shelf matters, and the pad does two jobs at once: it protects the finish and adds the friction that stops the holder sliding under load.
The weighted flat-block set is the plain version of the same idea — the mass is there, the pad is not stated, so put something under it on a surface you care about.
If there is no mantel at all
Most houses do not have one, and this category is sold as though every house does. The alternatives — a staircase, a shelf, a curtain pole — are covered on hanging stockings without a mantel, and several of them need no holder at all.
