Christmas garland: tips per foot, and how much you actually need
Nine feet of garland does not cover nine feet of banister. Here is the length arithmetic and the density figures behind it.

Two things go wrong with garland and both are arithmetic. The first is buying the measured length rather than the length plus swag, and coming up short at the far end. The second is buying a garland with no published tip count and finding it reads as wire rather than greenery.
Both are solvable before you buy. Here is how.

Twenty-eight tips per foot is a useful reference point. Below roughly 20 per foot a garland looks thin on a bare banister and you can see the central wire through it, which is the specific failure people describe as “it looked better online.”
How much length you need
Garland is never installed straight. It swags between fixings, it wraps a newel post, it drapes over a mantel edge and hangs down at both ends. The working rule is to add a third to the straight-line measurement.

A doorway is the classic case where 'nine feet is plenty' turns out to be three inches short.
Plug-in, battery, or neither
- Plug-in is brighter, never needs batteries, and requires a cord that has to go somewhere. On a mantel with an outlet nearby it is the right choice; on a banister it usually is not.
- Battery with a timer is the practical answer for banisters, doorways and anywhere a cord would show. Expect a lower light count — 50 rather than 100 — and budget for fresh cells in December.
- Unlit garland plus your own string is the flexible option: you control the density and the color temperature, and a failed light section does not retire the garland. Work out the string length with the lights calculator.
Fluff it before you hang it
Garland ships compressed into a box and arrives looking flat. Before it goes up, run down its length and bend each branch outward and slightly upward, alternating the direction so it has depth rather than sitting in one plane. It takes about ten minutes for a 9-foot length and it changes the result more than any other single thing you can do.
Store it the same way you would a wreath: coiled loosely rather than folded, in a soft bag that will not compress it, and never at the bottom of a stack. The principle is in bins vs bags vs totes.

›How much garland do I need for a staircase banister?
Measure the straight-line run and add about a third for swag. A 12-foot banister needs about 16 feet, so two 9-foot garlands. Add another if you are wrapping the newel post.
›How many tips should garland have per foot?
Around 28 per foot reads as full on a bare banister. Below roughly 20 per foot the central wire shows through, which is the most common complaint about garland bought from a photograph.
›How do you keep garland from sagging?
Fix it every 18 to 24 inches with floral wire or clear cable ties rather than only at the ends, and let it swag evenly between fixings.
