Holiday dishes are the most fragile thing most families store. The Christmas plates, the Thanksgiving platter and the good glasses come out for a few meals a year and spend the rest of it on a high shelf or in a basement bin, where they chip against each other.

What a service for 12 needs
The arithmetic
- 4 plate sizes x 12 settings = 48 plates
- One felt divider between every plate = 48 dividers
- Plus 12 cups or mugs, and 12 glasses if you use stemware
A full service for twelve is 48 plates, 48 dividers and a case or two for cups and glasses. The Woffit covers all of it, glasses included; the hard-shell Stack Store set covers the 48 plates only.
Check the plate sizes
The Sorbus listing publishes its plate cases by diameter: 12 in dinner, 10 in salad, 8.5 in dessert and 7 in saucer. The Stack Store hard shells use the same four sizes. The Bulb & Shade set says service for 12 without sizes, so measure your biggest plate before buying it.
The arithmetic

Oversized holiday chargers and platters rarely fit a standard set. Measure them first and plan a separate padded box for anything over 12 in.
Soft or hard shell
Quilted cases are light, padded and easy to lift down from a high shelf, but they sag when stacked high. The Stack Store hard shells stack square and take the weight of the case above, which matters on a basement shelf holding four. Either way, the heaviest case — the dinner plates — goes on the bottom.
The glasses
Stemware is the most breakable piece of a holiday table and the piece most sets skip. The Woffit is the only set here with a case for 12 wine glasses. With any other set, wrap each glass and store it upright in a divided box, the way ornaments go into ornament storage boxes.
Why the single case is the skip
The single dessert case is a good case for completing a set you already own. On its own it holds one size of 8 in plates, and a holiday service needs four or five cases.
On the shelf with the rest
