The runner: length and overhang
The arithmetic
- Six-seat table: about 60 in long, 36 in wide
- 72 in runner - 60 in table = 12 in, or 6 in at each end
- 13 in runner / 36 in table width = 36% of the width
- An 8-seat 72 in table: 72 - 72 = 0 in overhang
A 72 in runner hangs 6 in off each end of a six-seat table and covers about a third of its width — the proportion that frames the table without swallowing it. On an eight-seat table, the same runner stops flush with the ends.

The centerpiece: half the length, six inches tall
This site sizes table centerpieces on two rules: no longer than half the table, and no taller than about six inches, so people seated opposite can still see each other.
The arithmetic

At each place

Metal rings are the one piece of Thanksgiving table decor that genuinely lasts, which makes them the cheapest over ten years.
Keep the table in the porch palette
