The best overhead garage storage racks for holiday decorations

Holiday totes come down twice a year and sit untouched the rest of the time — exactly what the space above the car is for. The ceiling drop decides where it can go.

By Sawyer V. · Published

A stack of plastic storage containers

Holiday decorations are the ideal overhead-storage load. They are bulky, they are light, and they are touched twice a year — down in the fall, back up in January. The space above a parked car is the ideal place for exactly that kind of load, and it is usually empty.

The number that decides where an overhead rack can go is not its capacity. It is how far it hangs below the ceiling. Five racks below, ranked on deck size, drop, loading and what they publish.

FLEXIMOUNTS overhead garage rack, 4 x 8 ft, 750 lb

96 x 48 in deck, 22 to 40 in drop, 750 lb

Good

  • Deck size, drop range, capacity and volume all published — everything you need to plan the space
  • A 4 x 8 ft deck takes a full year of holiday totes off the floor

Watch out

  • At full 40 in drop on an 8 ft ceiling, the underside sits at 56 in — over a car hood, not a walkway
  • Ceiling-mounted means lifting totes overhead to load it

#2 — Loading without a ladder

Overhead garage storage lift, 4 x 8 ft, 325 lb, safety lock

A lift that lowers the deck, with a safety lock

The pick for anyone who will not be carrying totes up a ladder twice a year. The capacity is still more than decorations need.

Good

  • A lift lowers the deck to you, so totes are loaded at waist height rather than carried up a ladder
  • A published safety lock holds the deck in its raised position

Watch out

  • 325 lb is well under half the fixed racks' capacity
  • More moving parts than a fixed rack, and more to install

#3 — The highest published capacity

SunsGrove overhead garage rack, 4 x 8 ft, 800 lb

800 lb, 22 to 40 in drop

Buy it if the rack is doing double duty. For decorations alone, the extra 50 lb buys nothing.

Good

  • 800 lb is the highest capacity here, for a rack that also holds tools or paint
  • Same 22 to 40 in adjustable drop as the FLEXIMOUNTS

Watch out

  • Holiday decorations will never approach 800 lb — capacity is not the constraint on this job
  • No published storage volume

#4 — A single-car garage or a short bay

FLEXIMOUNTS overhead garage rack, 4 x 6 ft, 450 lb

72 x 48 in deck, up to 40 in drop, 450 lb

The pick when the space above the car is shorter than eight feet. Measure the door track before choosing either size.

Good

  • A 6 ft deck fits a bay where an 8 ft rack would clash with the garage door track

  • A quarter less deck area than the 4 x 8 racks
  • The drop range is published only as a maximum

#5 — skip this

FLEXIMOUNTS Lite overhead rack, 4 x 8 ft, without decking

600 lb frame, no decking included

Our skip for decoration storage. A rack without a deck is a frame; the Classic ships with the part totes actually sit on.

Watch out

  • Sold without decking — totes need a floor, so you are buying and cutting plywood before it holds anything

How we ranked these

Published dimensions first, then how hard the rack is to load, then capacity. Capacity is ranked last deliberately: decorations will not approach any of these limits.

Ceiling drop is how far the deck hangs below the ceiling. Every rack here mounts to the ceiling structure; check your joists against the listing before ordering.

The headroom arithmetic

The arithmetic

  1. Assume an 8 ft (96 in) garage ceiling
  2. At the 40 in maximum drop: 96 - 40 = 56 in clear below the deck
  3. At the 22 in minimum drop: 96 - 22 = 74 in clear
  4. A 6 ft adult is 72 in

Even at its shortest drop, the deck sits at about head height on an 8 ft ceiling. That is why overhead racks go above the hood of a parked car, never over a walkway — and why the drop is set to clear the car, not the people.

The garage door is the other constraint. An open sectional door runs along tracks just under the ceiling, and a rack in its path will stop it. Measure where the door sits when open before choosing between the 8 ft and 6 ft racks.

How much a 4 x 8 deck holds

The arithmetic

  1. Deck: 96 x 48 in = 4,608 sq in = 32 sq ft
  2. At 40 in of height: 32 x 3.33 = 107 cu ft (listing: up to 105)
  3. A 27 gal tote = 3.6 cu ft, this site's standing conversion
  4. 105 / 3.6 = 29 totes by volume

By volume, a full-height 4 x 8 rack holds about 29 totes' worth — more than most households' entire holiday inventory. In practice the tote footprint decides the count, so measure yours against the 96 x 48 in deck.

How much space a collection actually needs, worked from the other direction, is on how much storage space do I need.

Ladder or lift

The fixed racks are loaded from a ladder: a tote carried up, slid onto a deck at head height or above. Twice a year that is fine for some people and a genuine hazard for others. The lift rack lowers its deck to you, so totes go on at waist height, and publishes a safety lock for the raised position.

A rack without a deck

Our skip, the FLEXIMOUNTS Lite, is sold without decking — a frame of rails. Totes need a floor, so it arrives needing plywood cut to size before it holds a single box. The Classic ships with the part the totes actually sit on.

Overhead is the top of a system

The overhead rack is for the things touched least — the tree bag, the inflatables, the spare lights. The things you reach for through the season go on shelving at waist height, which is ranked on the best shelving for decoration storage. Which room gets what is on attic, garage or basement, and the damp problem every garage has on damp and pest protection.

Questions

How low does an overhead garage rack hang?

The racks here drop 22 to 40 in below the ceiling. On an 8 ft ceiling that leaves 56 to 74 in underneath — about head height at best, which is why they go over the hood of a car rather than over a walkway.

How many storage totes fit on a 4 x 8 overhead rack?

By volume, about 29 of the 27 gallon size at full height: the listing publishes up to 105 cubic feet, and a 27 gallon tote is 3.6. The real count depends on your tote footprint against the 96 x 48 in deck.

How much weight do I need for holiday decorations?

Much less than any rack here holds. Decorations are bulky and light; even the 325 lb lift rack is far above what a full holiday inventory weighs.

Will an overhead rack block the garage door?

It can. An open sectional door runs on tracks just below the ceiling. Measure where the door sits open before choosing a rack size and position.
