Artificial leaves are the filler of fall decorating. They go down the middle of a Thanksgiving table, into a glass jar on the mantel, onto a wreath, or onto a string as garland. They are sold by the hundred or by the thousand — and a thousand is more than most people think.

How far 1,000 leaves go
The arithmetic
- Example: a 6 ft table, scatter 12 in wide down the center (an assumption)
- 72 in x 12 in = 864 sq in
- One leaf per 3 x 3 in patch (9 sq in, an assumption): 864 / 9 = 96 leaves
- 1,000 / 96 = about 10 tables
A 1,000-leaf bag covers about ten 6 ft tables at a medium scatter. For one Thanksgiving table, the 100-leaf FZBNSRKO pack is enough, with a handful left for a jar.
Leaves as garland
The arithmetic
- One leaf every 2 in along a string
- 6 ft mantel: 72 / 2 = 36 leaves per strand
- 1,000 / 36 = about 27 strands
A bulk bag makes far more garland than one house needs. Thread a strand for the mantel and one for the table runner, and there is still most of a bag left to scatter.

Color mix is realism
Real fall leaves are not ten flat colors; they are spotted, blotched and shaded. That is why the Bassion bag ranks first: its three designs include a spotted yellow-green-orange leaf and two ombre leaves, which read as real at arm’s length. The ElaDeco’s 10 colors are the widest range; sort out the greens and the brightest yellows to push the palette deeper. The palettes that hold together on a porch are on fall porch color palettes.
Wreaths and crafts
For a wreath, shape matters more than count. The FZBNSRKO pack mixes maple and oak leaves in four sizes, which looks more natural than a ring of identical maples, and at 100 leaves it is a craft-sized pack rather than a room-sized bag. Pair it with artificial mums for a harvest wreath, or start from a finished one on the best fall wreaths.
