Projector or window silhouettes: motion, or a shape that always works
A projector needs darkness, a throw distance and a screen. A silhouette needs a lit room and a piece of tape. One of them fails on a rainy night.
By Sawyer V. · Published

Both of these put a figure in a front window. A projector throws a moving one; a silhouette poster sticks a still one to the glass. In a photograph the projector wins every time, which is why it is the thing people buy first and the thing that most often ends up in a cupboard.
The honest comparison is about conditions. A projection needs darkness, distance and a surface. A silhouette needs a lamp behind it. One of those is much easier to arrange on the last week of October.

How we compared them
Published figures first: screen size, content, throw guidance, resolution where any listing gives one. Then the conditions each needs to look right, and what happens when those conditions are not there.
| Product | Type | Published content | Screen or size | Throw |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reaper Brothers kit | Projector kit | 9 AtmosFX effects | 48 x 72 in screen included | 6 to 8 ft |
| 12-movie projector | Projector | 12 pre-loaded movies | No screen | Not published |
| WOWindow posters | Silhouette poster | 2 posters | 34.5 x 60 in each | Not applicable |
| GP-Life clings | Clings | Witch silhouettes | Large, dimensions not stated | Not applicable |
Not one projector here publishes an ANSI lumen figure, so brightness is unknown before purchase. The posters publish their dimensions, which is the figure that decides whether they fit the glass.

What each one needs to work
A projector needs three things at once: a dark window, a throw distance the room can give, and a surface to land on. The kit here publishes 6 to 8 ft of throw, which is a real constraint in a small front room — and it includes a rear-projection screen, which is the part people discover they need on October 30.
The arithmetic
- Published throw guidance: 6 to 8 ft from the window
- A typical front room is 12 ft deep, so the projector sits mid-room
- Screen: 48 x 72 in, which is 4 x 6 ft of image
- A standard double-hung window is about 3 x 5 ft
The published 48 by 72 in screen is larger than a standard window, so the image can be cropped to fit rather than stretched. But a projector mid-room means a table, a cord across a floor and a room that cannot have its lights on.
A silhouette needs one thing: a lit room behind it. That is why it works on a night when the weather is bad, when the family is watching television in the room, and when nobody wants a tripod in the middle of the floor. Our window projection setup page covers the projector side properly, and Halloween window decorations ranks the poster and cling field.
The failure modes are completely different
A projector fails visibly. Rain on the glass scatters the image, a streetlight washes it out, a lamp left on in the room kills it, and the whole effect goes from impressive to invisible. It also fails at the wrong moment, which is dusk on the 31st.
A silhouette does not fail, it just is what it is: the same shape every night, flat, still, and dependent on a lamp you were going to leave on anyway. The trade is motion — and motion is genuinely what makes people stop on a sidewalk.
What each one costs in effort, not money
A projector is roughly an hour the first time: position, focus, keystone, screen, cord, and a decision about where the box lives every evening. After that it is five minutes a night, and it has to be taken in when it rains unless the listing publishes a weather rating — neither of these does.
A poster is ten minutes, once, for the season. That asymmetry is the reason the honest recommendation for a first Halloween is a silhouette, and the projector is the upgrade for the year you know you will use it. The whole projector field, including outdoor-rated models, is on Halloween projectors.
Who should buy which
Buy a projector if you have a room you can darken for the evening, 6 to 8 ft of throw, and somewhere dry to put the box. Buy the kit with the screen rather than the bare projector — the screen is not optional and buying it separately costs more.
Buy silhouettes if the front room is in use, if the window faces a streetlight, if the weather is unreliable, or if you want the display up for the whole of October rather than for the evenings you are home to set it up. Buy the poster that publishes its dimensions.
Buy both for the obvious reason: posters on the upstairs windows for the month, a projection downstairs on the night itself. The rest of the front is on the best outdoor Halloween decorations.

Good
- It publishes the placement distance, which is the number that decides whether the illusion works in your hallway
- Screen dimensions published, so you can check them against your actual doorway
Watch out
- 720p is a real step down from 1080p at close range
- 6 to 8 feet of clearance is more than many entryways have

#2 — skip this
WHZQDD Halloween and Christmas window projector, 12 movies

Good
- Cheapest way to try projection decorating before spending real money
- A tripod and a projection screen in the box, so there is nothing else to buy to try it
- Publishes the 6-and-6 split across the two seasons, and the unit's size and weight
Watch out
- Nothing about its optical performance is published — not resolution, not brightness, not throw. "HD" appears as a word with no figure behind it
- Buying a projector with no published specs is buying a photograph
Specs from the Amazon listing (ASIN B0D95JMD4Z), verified via the Creators API 2026-10-06. Replaces B09GPHVXHF, which Amazon now shows as currently unavailable; this listing carries the same 12 pre-loaded movies, now published as 6 Halloween and 6 Christmas, and adds the unit size, weight, tripod and screen. It still publishes no resolution figure, no ANSI lumens and no throw distance, so the skip reason is unchanged.

- Cling mounting means no adhesive residue, and the posters are reusable next year
Watch out
- Needs the room lit behind it; in a dark room it is just a dark window

Questions
›Are Halloween projectors worth it?
If you can darken the room and give the projector 6 to 8 ft of throw, yes — motion is what makes people stop. If the window faces a streetlight or the room stays lit, a silhouette poster does more for less.
›Do you need a screen for a Halloween window projector?
For a window projection, effectively yes. The kit here includes a 48 by 72 in rear-projection screen, which is larger than a standard 3 by 5 ft window so the image can be cropped to fit.
›Do window silhouettes show up at night?
Only with a light on in the room behind them — then they read as a shadow from the street. In a dark room they are just a dark window.
›Which is better in bad weather?
Silhouettes, easily. Rain on the glass scatters a projected image, and none of these projectors publishes a weather rating, so the box has to come in.
