The best Halloween window decorations, judged from the sidewalk

A lit window with a silhouette in it is a Halloween display that needs no yard, no cord and no stakes. Whether it reads after dark decides which kind to buy.

Halloween decorations lit outside a house at night

Windows are the most underused Halloween display on most houses. They face the street, they are lit from inside every evening, and they need nothing from the yard. A silhouette in a lit window reads from the sidewalk the way a Christmas window candle does.

There are three kinds on Amazon: backlit silhouette posters, window clings, and big static-cling posters. They behave differently after dark, so that is how we ranked them. Five below, one to skip.

Wreath & Watt earns a commission on qualifying purchases made through the Amazon links on this page. It costs you nothing and it does not change the order of the picks — here is exactly how we are funded.

How we ranked these

Night visibility first, since trick-or-treating happens after dark. Then the daytime look, how cleanly it comes off the glass, and how much the listing tells you. Few window products publish dimensions, and that gap counts against them.

The At night column is our reading of each type: a dark shape on glass shows from outside only when the room behind it is lit.

Silhouettes need light behind them

A black silhouette on a window is invisible from the street after dark unless the room behind it is lit. That is the whole idea of the WOWindows posters: they hang inside the frame, the room lights come on, and the scene shows as a shadow from outside. Every other product here works the same way at night; WOWindows is the one designed around it and saying so.

So leave a lamp on in each decorated room for the evening, on the same timer that runs the porch.

The arithmetic

  1. Example: 3 decorated front windows, one 9 W LED lamp bulb each (an assumption)
  2. 3 x 9 W = 27 W
  3. 27 W x 5 h a night (6 pm to 11 pm) x 31 nights = 4,185 Wh = 4.2 kWh

Backlighting three windows for all of October takes about 4 kWh — roughly what two colored porch bulbs use over the same month. Multiply by your rate per kWh.

Clings work in daylight too

Clings are printed vinyl that holds to glass by static, not glue. They show their colors in daylight, which a silhouette poster does not, and they come off without residue. The GP-Life set is the large-silhouette version. The double-sided set is printed on both faces, so the family inside sees the haunted house too rather than the back of a sticker.

Clings need clean, dry glass. Condensation on a cold October morning lifts them, so wipe the window first and press the air out from the middle.

How many windows to do

The arithmetic

  1. Count the street-facing windows: e.g. 2 downstairs + 2 upstairs = 4 (an assumption)
  2. WOWindows at 2 posters a pack: 4 / 2 = 2 packs
  3. Giant witch poster: one scene per window

Do the downstairs windows first; trick-or-treaters walk right past them. Upstairs windows are read from across the street, where one big scene per window works better than a cluster of small clings.

Why we skip the giant silhouettes

The giant silhouettes listing gives no size, no material and no mounting method. For a product whose whole job is to fit a window, those are the specs that matter. The giant witch poster at least tells you it is PVC that clings without glue.

Pairing with the rest of the front

Windows plus a porch make a complete Halloween front on a house with no yard; the plan is on small porch Halloween decorations. The Christmas version of the same idea, lit windows as the display, is on Christmas window decorating.

Questions

Do Halloween window silhouettes show at night?

Only with a light on in the room behind them. From outside, the silhouette shows as a shadow against a lit window. In a dark room it is just a dark window.

Should window clings go inside or outside?

Inside. Rain and morning dew get behind clings on the outside and lift them. Clean, dry glass on the inside holds them all season.

Do window clings leave residue?

Static clings hold without glue, so they come off clean. Adhesive-mounted posters, like the WOWindows squares, are sold as removable; test one in a corner of the frame first.

How many Halloween window decorations do I need?

One per street-facing window, starting downstairs where trick-or-treaters pass. One big scene per window reads better from across the street than a cluster of small clings.
