Lighting a Halloween display, beyond the projector

Direction does more than colour, and colour does more than brightness. Three lighting decisions that change a yard more than another prop would.

Halloween is the only decorating season that happens entirely after dark, which makes it the one where lighting is not a finishing touch. A yard full of props with no lighting plan is a yard of dark shapes; the same props lit deliberately are a display.

Three decisions do almost all of the work, and none of them is about buying a brighter light. They are direction, colour and control.

Direction changes a shape more than colour does

Light from above is how the world normally looks, so it reads as ordinary. Light from below inverts the shadows on anything with structure — a face, a tree, a balustrade — and that inversion is the entire visual language of this season. It costs nothing to choose and it is the single biggest lever available.

Most displays are lit entirely from the fourth row plus a porch light, which is why they read flat. Adding one uplight to one tree changes more than another prop would.

The 7-foot Hiboom spider is a neat example of a piece that brings its own direction: a static figure with an integrated projector light throwing purple and white, published for roof, yard, lawn and patio placement. Colour, and what survives the distance

Colour behaves differently across a yard than it does in a product photograph. Saturated colour loses definition with distance, and a display lit entirely in one strong colour reads as a flat wash rather than as objects.

The approach that works is one dominant colour plus a contrast, rather than everything in the same hue. Purple or green across the general area with warm amber at the door gives the eye something to resolve; purple everywhere does not.

A 400-LED mappable RGB+W string is the flexible way to do this — 105 feet of individually addressable LEDs means the colour is a setting rather than a purchase, and the same string is warm white in December. Control: one decision instead of six

A lit display has more things to switch on than a prop display does, and the failure mode is that half of it gets switched on. The fix is a single distribution point with control built in.

A six-outlet ETL-listed stake puts six grounded outlets at the display on a waterproof lead, with dusk-to-dawn and countdown control and a 100-foot remote. On a Halloween display the lighting is rarely the load problem. The blowers are — plan the circuit around them and the lighting fits inside it.

Three things that undo a lighting plan

  • Leaving the porch light on. It is usually the brightest source on the frontage and it flattens everything else, including any projection. Switch it off and light the path deliberately instead.
  • Aiming an uplight where people walk. Glare into the eyes at the approach ruins both the effect and the visibility.
  • Mixing colour temperatures by accident. Two warm whites from different makers are frequently not the same warm white, and the mismatch is obvious along a single run — see warm white vs cool white.
