Getting the scale right

The failure mode on a small porch is one oversized object rather than several small ones. A single 3-foot piece reads as decoration; a single 7-foot piece reads as a storage problem you are currently standing next to.

On a porch, light does the work

A yard display is read from the street and works by silhouette. A porch is read from the path, at a distance of ten or fifteen feet, and at that range lighting matters more than scale. This is the single biggest difference in approach and it is what makes a small entrance look considered rather than under-decorated.

Small home, small storage. Weight the whole decision toward pieces that collapse: the stackable pumpkin folds, the inflatable deflates, the projector is a box. What does not fold — rigid lanterns, in this list — should be things you are happy to leave out through November, which lanterns genuinely are.
