Count the ribs
The arithmetic
- 104 LEDs / 8 strands = 13 LEDs per rib
- A 9 ft umbrella: ribs about 4.5 ft long
- 13 LEDs / 4.5 ft = 2.9 LEDs per foot of rib
An 8-strand kit puts about 13 LEDs on each rib — about 3 per foot on a 9 ft umbrella. On a 6-rib umbrella, two strands have nowhere to go; on a 10-rib umbrella, two ribs stay dark.
That is why the 8-rib kit, which publishes the rib count it fits, and the parasol lights, which publish a 7 to 10 ft canopy range, are easier to buy with confidence than the kits that say neither.
Battery, USB or rechargeable
The USB or battery kit runs from three AA cells or a USB source — a power bank on the table runs it all evening without touching the cells. It also publishes the most complete weather spec here: IP65 for the battery box, IP68 for the strands.
Or light the table instead
The pole light clamps to the umbrella pole and shines down on the table: eight warm bulbs, three brightness levels, rechargeable. It does not decorate the umbrella, but it is the better light to eat by. Many patios want both.
