Lighting the garden, not just the patio
Four surfaces, four formats. What to use on a tree, a hedge, a path and a fence, and how the power actually gets out there.

Patio lighting is a solved problem and it stops at the edge of the paving. The garden beyond it is where most outdoor lighting money is wasted, because the same festoon string gets bought again for a surface it does not suit.
A garden has four kinds of thing to light and they want four different formats. Here is which goes where, with the published figures for each, and the cord question that decides whether any of it is practical.

The fourth row carries a condition rather than a specification, which is the honest way to describe solar: it works where the panel gets real daylight and not otherwise.

Trees take more string than anyone expects
Wrapping consumes length at a rate outlining never does, because the strand travels around the trunk rather than along it. The arithmetic is short and it is worth doing before ordering.
The arithmetic
- Trunk circumference 24 in = 2 ft
- 8 ft of trunk at a 4 in vertical gap = 24 wraps
- 2 ft x 24 = 48 ft of lighted strand
- A 100-count mini string publishes 33 ft lighted length
- 48 / 33 = 1.5, so two strings for one modest trunk
One 8 ft section of a modest trunk takes two 100-count strings. Two mature trees flanking a drive will take six to eight.

Hedges want a net, not a spiral
A dense shrub has no single axis to wrap around, so hand-wrapping produces bright patches and dark hollows and takes an hour doing it. A 15 by 5 foot mesh of 300 LEDs drops over the whole thing in one movement and reads as even coverage.
Check the published maximum connected count before planning a long hedge run — nets are typically limited to two or three sets end to end, which is a much tighter constraint than the circuit. Both limits are explained on connecting light strings, and the net comparison is on net lights.
The large specimen tree
A single large tree is the best thing in most gardens to light, and it is the one place a long mappable string earns its price. The 400-LED Twinkly string publishes 105 feet with individually addressable RGB+W LEDs, which is enough length to work a substantial canopy in one piece and then run effects along it rather than switching the whole thing on and off.

Getting power to the far end
This is what actually decides whether a garden scheme is practical, and it is worth settling before buying any lights. A garden run is long, it crosses ground people walk on, and it is the one part of the installation that is visible in daylight.
A 50-foot 16 AWG green outdoor cord publishes 13 A on an SJTW outdoor jacket, which is comfortably ahead of what LED garden lighting draws, and the green jacket is the actual feature — it is the run you would rather not see crossing a lawn. The restraint that makes a garden look lit
Lighting everything produces a flat, evenly bright garden that reads as security lighting. Lighting three things and leaving the rest dark produces depth, because the dark is what makes the lit parts read.
Pick a near element, a mid element and one thing at the back — a wrapped trunk close to the house, a hedge run in the middle, one specimen tree at the boundary — and stop there. ›How many lights do I need to wrap a garden tree?
Multiply the trunk circumference by the number of wraps, where wraps is the height covered divided by the vertical gap. An 8 ft section of a 24-inch-circumference trunk at a 4-inch gap needs 48 feet of strand, which is two 100-count strings.
›What lights are best for hedges?
A net laid over the top. A dense shrub has no axis to spiral around, so hand-wrapping produces bright patches and dark hollows. Check the published maximum connected count before planning a long run.
›Can I run an extension cord across the garden?
For an outdoor-rated cord, yes — use one with an outdoor jacket marking such as SJTW, keep connections off the ground with a drip loop, and choose a green jacket if the run crosses a lawn. Where a cord would cross a walkway, use solar instead.
