Christmas decorations for renters: a front door that leaves no mark
No holes, no permanent fixings, nothing that needs an outdoor outlet. Four pieces cover a rented front, and three of them come off in one evening.
By Sawyer V. · Published

A lease usually says the same three things: no holes, no permanent fixings, and no alterations to the exterior. That rules out nails, staples, screw-in hooks and anything that gets painted over — which is most of how Christmas decorations are designed to attach.
It does not rule out a decorated front. It rules out four specific fixings, and there is a replacement for each one. The other rented-front problem is power: no outdoor outlet, and an extension cord under a door that other people use.

What to look for when nothing can be drilled
A published capacity. Over-door hangers state a weight limit — the one here publishes 20 lb — and that number is what decides whether your wreath is a wreath or a pile on the step.
Battery power with a timer. If there is no outdoor outlet, mains greenery is not an option at any price. A published timer is what stops battery decor being a nightly chore.
Static rather than adhesive, where possible. Static clings hold on glass with no glue at all, which is the only fixing that is unarguably reversible.
Adhesive as the last resort, applied early. Damage-free strips are fine on smooth painted trim if you apply them dry and warm and remove them by pulling the tab straight down. They are not fine on chalky paint or textured stucco.
| Piece | Fixing | Published capacity or count | Leaves behind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Over-door hanger | Hooks over the door leaf | 20 lb, adjusts 14.9 to 25 in | Nothing |
| Battery pre-lit garland | Drapes, no fixing needed | 9 ft, 50 LED, timer | Nothing |
| Static window clings | Static cling on glass | 10 sheets, 300 pieces | Nothing |
| Adhesive outdoor clips | Weather-resistant adhesive | 12 hooks, 16 strips | Nothing, if pulled correctly |
Only the over-door hanger publishes a weight rating. No adhesive clip in this category publishes one, which is why adhesive belongs on light objects and nothing else.

The door is the whole display on a rental
On a house you decorate the roofline. On a rental you decorate the one square yard everybody walks up to, and that means the door does most of the work. An over-door hanger is the single most useful thing on this page: it hooks over the leaf, it takes a 20 lb wreath, and it leaves nothing behind.
The arithmetic
- Standard door leaf: 80 in tall, 36 in wide
- Two-thirds of 36 in = 24 in, the usual wreath diameter for that door
- A 24 in artificial wreath with lights: typically 4 to 7 lb
- Published hanger capacity: 20 lb
A 24 in lit wreath uses about a third of the published capacity, which is the margin you want on a door that gets slammed. Sizing in full is on our wreath size guide.
The rest of the door surround — a swag above the frame, greenery down one side — is where the adhesive clips earn their place, because trim is smooth and painted and a garland weighs very little. Our Christmas door decorations page covers what fits a door and wreath hangers ranks the hangers themselves.
No outdoor outlet changes everything
Most rented fronts have no exterior socket, and running a cord out through a door is both a trip hazard and usually a lease problem in a shared entry. Battery is the answer, and the figures that matter are the timer and the run hours rather than the LED count.
A 50-LED battery garland on a 6-hours-on timer is genuinely enough for a door surround, and it switches itself. The battery-against-mains reasoning, including where battery falls down, is on battery or plug-in, and the no-drill fixing options for lights specifically are on no-drill Christmas lights.
Windows do the work the roofline cannot
Static clings are the one decoration with no downside on a rental: no glue, no fixing, no residue, and 300 pieces across ten sheets covers several windows. From outside at night a lit room behind clings reads as a decorated house, which is exactly the effect a roofline would have given you.
Add a battery candle per window and the front is finished. The whole window approach, including candle spacing and which windows to bother with, is on Christmas window decorating.
Rentals are small, so buy for storage too
The other rented-front constraint is that everything has to live somewhere for eleven months, usually in a closet. Flat things win: clings go back on their sheets, a garland coils, a hanger is 2 in thick. This is the one case where a smaller collection is a better collection — small-space decor storage is written for exactly that.

Good
- Publishes both a length range and a weight limit — the whole specification for this product
- 14.9 in is the lowest published start point here, so it suits a shallow door top
Watch out
- Over-door hangers need clearance between door and frame
- A 20 lb limit is common across the category, so it does not differentiate

Good
- 300 pieces is enough for every window in a house, plus mirrors and a glass door
- Static cling, so nothing adhesive touches the glass
- Snowflakes stay up through January when Santa cannot
Watch out
- Small individual pieces mean a lot of placing, and they scatter rather than compose
- Sheet size not published

Good
- Leaves no hole, which on a rented porch or a painted soffit is the only thing that matters
- Publishes both the hook count and the strip count, so you know how many spares you have
- Comes off at the end of the season instead of staying up all year
Watch out
- No published weight rating, and adhesive is the fixing most likely to let go in a gale
- No published temperature range — adhesives are at their worst on a cold, damp surface
- Sixteen strips for twelve hooks means four re-sticks, and that is the whole budget

Questions
›How do you hang Christmas decorations without making holes?
Three fixings cover almost everything: an over-door hanger for the wreath, static clings on glass, and weather-resistant adhesive strips on smooth painted trim. Apply adhesive dry and warm, and pull the tab straight down to remove it.
›How much weight can an over-door wreath hanger hold?
The one here publishes 20 lb and adjusts from 14.9 to 25 in. A 24 in lit artificial wreath is usually 4 to 7 lb, so that is a comfortable margin.
›What can I use for Christmas lights with no outdoor outlet?
Battery greenery and battery candles with published timers. Running an extension cord out through a door is both a trip hazard and, in a shared entry, usually a lease problem.
›Will Command strips damage rented paint?
Not if the paint is sound and the tab is pulled straight down slowly. On flaking or chalky paint, skip adhesive altogether and decorate the door and the glass instead.
