Half the advice about hanging Christmas lights assumes you own the house and are happy to put a staple through the fascia. If you rent, or your lease says otherwise, or you simply do not want a hundred holes in a painted board, the job is still entirely doable — but the hardware choice narrows and the trade-offs change.
What follows is the fitment question answered by surface: what a clip hooks onto, what it will hold, and where the honest answer is “nothing clips to that, use a different kind of light.”

What a clip actually hooks onto
Every no-drill clip works by hooking a lip or slipping under an edge. There are only three of those on a typical house, which is why fitment is a short table rather than a long one.

The sets that need no fixings at all
The cleanest solution to the fixing problem is not to need one. Two categories do that honestly.
Net lights lay over a shrub or a hedge and hold themselves. A 15 by 5 foot mesh of 300 LEDs covers a run of hedge in one piece with nothing attached to the building at all, which is why they are the standard answer for a rented front garden. Battery pre-lit greenery solves the other half: a doorway or a window with no outlet near it. A 9 ft battery garland with a built-in timer drapes over a door frame or a railing, needs no cord run and no outdoor outlet, and switches itself on and off. It is the piece that makes an apartment entrance look decorated without touching the building.
What holds, and what comes down in February
No-drill means the fixing is holding by geometry rather than by a fastener, so wind is the variable that decides how the season ends. Nobody publishes a wind rating for a light clip, so we will not print one. What can be said from the published designs: a clip that grips both sides of a gutter lip has more to hold onto than an open S-hook, and a strand run through clips at close spacing has less free length to move than the same strand clipped every three feet.
The practical version: buy more clips than you think you need and space them closer on exposed elevations. A 100-pack at 12-inch spacing covers 100 feet of run; at 18 inches it covers 150. Choose the spacing for the wind you get, not for the size of the bag.

At the close spacing an exposed elevation wants, a 100-pack does not cover a typical front. Buy the second bag before you are on the ladder.
Before you buy anything
Check what the lease or the association actually restricts, because it is often the fixing rather than the decoration — and clips that hook a gutter are usually fine where a staple gun is not. It is also worth confirming there is a working outdoor outlet before you plan around a plug-in set; if there is not, the battery and solar options change from second-best to the only option. ›How do I hang Christmas lights without nails or staples?
Use clips that hook the gutter lip or slide under a shingle butt, wrap railings and columns rather than fixing to them, and use net lights over shrubs where there is nothing to clip to. Between those three, most front elevations can be lit with nothing driven into the building.
›Will light clips damage my gutters?
The clips themselves are flexible plastic designed to grip a lip without a fastener, so the failure mode is a clip letting go rather than a gutter being damaged. What we cannot tell you is how your gutters are attached or what condition they are in, and neither can any manufacturer.
›Can I decorate an apartment balcony with no outdoor outlet?
Yes, with battery pre-lit greenery and a built-in timer — a 9 ft garland over a railing needs no cord, no outlet and no fixing beyond being draped. Solar pieces are the other route, with the caveat that they need real daylight on the panel, which a north-facing balcony may not give them.
›How many clips do I need?
Divide your total run length by your chosen spacing. A 100-pack covers 100 feet at 12-inch spacing or 150 feet at 18-inch spacing, and exposed elevations want the closer number. Measure the rakes as well as the eaves — the sloped edge is longer than the horizontal distance it covers.
