Wreath hangers, ranked on the two numbers that decide the purchase

Length range and weight limit. Unusually for this site, most of the category publishes both — which makes the choice unusually easy.

By Sawyer V. · Published

An evergreen wreath hanging on a wooden front door

A wreath hanger is the least considered purchase in this whole category and the one most likely to end with a wreath on the step. It is also, refreshingly, a category that publishes its specifications: a length range and a weight limit, on almost every listing.

Those two numbers do nearly all the work. The third consideration — whether the door still closes — is the one that catches people out, and only one design here solves it.

Good

  • Publishes both a length range and a weight limit — the whole specification for this product
  • 14.9 in is the lowest published start point here, so it suits a shallow door top

Watch out

  • Over-door hangers need clearance between door and frame
  • A 20 lb limit is common across the category, so it does not differentiate

The HEYHOUSE hanger takes the top spot on the widest published range with a stated capacity and stated door padding. At 14.9 inches it has the lowest start point here, which matters on a shallow door top where a longer hanger simply hangs the wreath too low.

Getting the length right

The arithmetic

  1. Measure from the top of the door to where the wreath centre should sit
  2. A 36 in wide door, wreath centred: about a third of the way down
  3. On an 80 in door that is about 27 in from the top
  4. Subtract half the wreath diameter: 27 - 12 = 15 in of hanger

A 24 in wreath centred on a standard door wants about 15 in of hanger — the short end of every range here.

That arithmetic is why the start of the range matters more than the end. Almost every hanger reaches 25 inches; the useful question is how short it goes, because a wreath hung too low reads as an accident. Wreath sizing itself is on what size wreath your door takes.

The Haute Decor Adapt is the only design here built for that failure: its top hook adjusts horizontally as well as the length adjusting vertically, which is what lets it sit correctly on a door it would otherwise foul. If a previous hanger has stopped your door closing, this is the one to buy rather than a thinner version of the same thing.

What 20 pounds actually covers

Comfortably more than a typical artificial wreath, and the reason the figure is worth checking is the trim rather than the foliage. A heavily decorated wreath with pinecones, a large wired bow and applied ornaments weighs considerably more than the same wreath bare, and a swag more again.

The Haute Decor adjustable-length hanger publishes its 20 lb capacity specifically against heavy wreaths and swags, which is the right framing — capacity matters at the top of the range, not the middle.

Double doors, and buying two that match

On a double entry, two hangers that differ slightly in length put two wreaths at two different heights, which is more visible than it sounds. The AUXPhome two-pack exists for that, and buying a matched pair is the point rather than the saving.

The same logic applies to a door plus a window, or a run of windows — the placement guidance for those is on wreaths for windows and interior walls.

Storm doors and the alternative fixings

Where there is a storm door, the clearance between the two doors is the constraint rather than the hanger, and a decorated wreath is deeper than its foliage. If the gap is tight the answers are to hang on the storm door itself, to move the wreath to a window, or to choose a flatter wreath — that sizing problem is worked through on our wreath size guide.

The GP Life hanger is the plain fully-specified option for a door with none of these complications: a 10-inch adjustment span, a stated capacity, and nothing else to think about.

Questions

What length wreath hanger do I need?

Measure from the top of the door to where the wreath centre should sit, then subtract half the wreath diameter. A 24-inch wreath centred on a standard door needs about 15 inches of hanger, which is the short end of most ranges.

How much weight can a wreath hanger hold?

Most publish 20 pounds, which comfortably covers a typical artificial wreath. The figure matters for heavily trimmed wreaths and swags, where pinecones, a large wired bow and applied ornaments add up.

My wreath hanger stops the door closing. What do I do?

Use a hanger whose top hook adjusts horizontally as well as adjusting in length. That is the design built for a thick or weather-stripped door, and it is the only one here that addresses the problem directly.

Do I need two hangers for double doors?

Yes, and buy them as a matched pair. Two hangers that differ slightly in length put the wreaths at two different heights, which is more noticeable than you would expect.
