Christmas lights for a ranch house: wide, low, and longer than you think

A ranch has no second story to light and twice the roofline length to cover. The problem is distance, not height — which changes what to buy.

By Sawyer V. · Published

A house outlined in warm string lights at dusk, seen from the street

Advice about outdoor Christmas lights is mostly written for a two-story colonial: tall, narrow, and a ladder problem. A ranch is the opposite shape. The eave is within reach, there is no second-floor gable to worry about, and the roofline runs and runs.

That changes the shopping list in three ways. You need more length per purchase, you need more clips than a tall house does, and you probably do not need a ladder at all.

Wreath & Watt earns a commission on qualifying purchases made through the Amazon links on this page. It costs you nothing and it does not change the order of the picks — here is exactly how we are funded.

What to look for on a wide, low house

Published run length, in long units. A ranch front is commonly 50 to 70 ft including the garage. Buying it in 25 ft sets means five joins; buying it in 100 ft plus sets means one.

Bulb spacing you can see from the road. A long low line of light is read sideways rather than up, so bulb spacing matters more than bulb count: widely spaced C9 reads as a deliberate line, and dense mini reads as a stripe.

Clips by the hundred. At one clip per foot a ranch front is 50 to 70 fixings before you touch the porch.

A pole rather than a ladder. On a single story the eave is usually within 10 to 12 ft, which is exactly the range a telescoping pole covers — and that turns a two-person ladder job into a one-person afternoon.

The C9 set is the only one here that covers a whole ranch front in a single run, which is the specific advantage a wide house needs.

The length arithmetic

Measure the gutter, not the house. A ranch front is the main roofline plus the garage, and the garage is usually the part people forget when they buy.

The arithmetic

  1. Example ranch: 44 ft of main roofline plus a 22 ft garage = 66 ft
  2. One 114 ft C9 set covers it with 48 ft spare for the porch and a tree
  3. The same 66 ft in 25 ft sets: 3 sets and two joins, with 9 ft wasted
  4. Clips at 12 in: 66 clips, so one 100-pack

A single long C9 run covers a ranch front and leaves enough spare for the porch. Buying in short sets on a wide house means joins, and every join is a connection sitting in the weather.

The general version of this calculation, by roofline length and bulb spacing, is on how many Christmas lights do I need, and the join limits are on connecting light strings.

The ladder you probably do not need

This is the real difference between a ranch and a two-story, and it is worth spelling out. A single-story eave is typically 8 to 10 ft off the ground, and a telescoping pole with a clip head reaches 12 ft. That means the whole roofline can be clipped standing on the lawn, in daylight, without a second person to hold anything.

It also means the job takes about a third as long, because the slow part of ladder work is not the clipping — it is moving the ladder every four feet. The pole field is on Christmas light hanging poles, and the fixing options are on light clips.

What to light when there is no second story

A tall house gives you vertical lines for free. A ranch has one horizontal line and a lot of lawn, so the display needs something to break the line up or it reads as a single stripe.

Three things do that cheaply. Wrap a porch column or a pair of trees to introduce verticals — wrapping trees and columns. Light the windows so the wall has depth — Christmas window decorating. And put something at the door, because on a low house the door is at eye level from the street: front porch Christmas decor.

One circuit, one timer, one switch

The other quiet advantage of a ranch: everything is close to one outlet, so the whole front can usually run off a single switched point. That is worth designing for — one timer, one cord route, one thing to unplug — and it is much harder to achieve on a house with two floors and four gables. Size the load first with how many amps.

Good

  • One box covers a run that would take four or five 25-foot commercial sets
  • Timer is built into the string, so you are not also buying an outdoor timer

Watch out

  • No published IP rating, which is the number that actually predicts a wet-season failure
  • Modes mean a controller in line — one more thing that can fail outdoors

Good

  • 4-inch spacing over 33 feet is the density most tree-wrapping guidance assumes
  • Brown wire disappears against bark and trunk wraps, where white wire draws a line
  • LED draw means you can run many strings on one circuit — see our amp guide

Watch out

  • Wattage is not printed on the listing, so you have to read the tag on the string itself
  • Brown reads as a visible line against a white railing — that is what the white-wire set is for

Questions

›How many feet of lights does a ranch house need?

Measure the main roofline plus the garage. A common ranch front is 44 ft plus a 22 ft garage = 66 ft, which one 114 ft C9 set covers in a single run with spare for the porch.

›Can I hang Christmas lights on a ranch house without a ladder?

Usually yes. A single-story eave is typically 8 to 10 ft up and a telescoping pole reaches 12 ft, so the roofline can be clipped from the lawn.

›How many clips for a 66 ft roofline?

About 66 at one clip per foot, which is one 100-pack with spares for the porch. Wider spacing lets the string scallop between fixings, which shows from the street.

›How do you stop a ranch house looking like one straight line of lights?

Add verticals: wrap a column or a pair of trees, light the windows, and decorate the door. On a low house the door is at eye level from the street, so it does more work than on a two-story.
