Lighting a two-story house without renting a lift
The second story adds reach, run length and load all at once. Here is the arithmetic for each, and the hardware that answers it.

A two-story house is not a one-story house with more lights on it. The upper roofline is out of ladder reach from the ground, the run is long enough that a single set will not cover it, and the total wattage is high enough that where you plug in stops being a detail. Those are three separate problems and each one has a number attached.
This page works through all three: how much extra lighted length a second story actually adds, how many sets you can chain before the plug rather than the breaker becomes the limit, and what the realistic options are when the peak is thirty feet up. What a second story actually adds
Measure before you buy anything. The three lengths that matter are the lower eave line, the upper eave line, and the rake — the sloped edge that runs up each side of a gable. People remember the first, forget the third, and end up two sets short on the coldest evening of the year.
The rake is the one that surprises. On a gable with a 6/12 pitch, the sloped edge is longer than the horizontal distance it covers by about 12 percent, because the slope is the hypotenuse of a right triangle whose base is half the gable width and whose rise is half of that. If your gable is 24 feet wide, each rake is not 12 feet of light. It is closer to 13.4.
The arithmetic
- Gable width 24 ft, so each rake covers 12 ft horizontally
- 6/12 pitch means 6 in of rise per 12 in of run: rise = 6 ft
- Rake length = sqrt(12^2 + 6^2) = sqrt(144 + 36) = sqrt(180)
- sqrt(180) = 13.4 ft per rake, 26.8 ft for the pair
A 24 ft gable needs about 27 ft of light on the rakes alone, not 24.
Add the two eave lines and the number climbs fast. A frontage that reads as “about forty feet” from the street is routinely a hundred feet of lighted length once the upper eave and both rakes are counted. One long run, or several chained sets
Once the total passes about eighty feet you have a choice to make, and it is not the choice most pages describe. Chaining short sets end to end is limited by the set’s own published maximum connected count, which protects the first plug in the chain — a limit that has nothing to do with your breaker and applies at the same time. A single long run sidesteps that entirely.

The practical read: for a two-story frontage, fewer joints is worth real money. A single 114-foot C9 run covers the whole front of most houses from one outlet with one connection to make on a ladder, which is one more reason it earns its place on our C9 comparison. Where you want commercial hardware you will be re-hanging for a decade, the Wintergreen 18 AWG sets are the better build and you accept the joints.
The part that is not about lights
The upper eave of a two-story house is typically eighteen to twenty-two feet from grade, and the peak of a gable higher still. That is above the comfortable working height of the extension ladder most households own, and it is the reason permanently installed track exists at all.
Track systems are a one-time install: the channel goes up once, under the drip edge, and the lights live in it year round under app control. Load, and why the outlet moves
A two-story display is usually the first one where the circuit budget becomes real. The convention is 80 percent of the breaker rating for anything running three hours or more, which on a 15 A circuit is 1,440 W.
The arithmetic
- 15 A x 120 V = 1,800 W circuit capacity
- 1,800 W x 0.8 = 1,440 W continuous budget
- C9 LED at about 1 W per bulb: 150 bulbs = 150 W
- C9 incandescent at 7 W per bulb: 150 bulbs = 1,050 W
- 1,440 W / 1,050 W = 1.4 — one incandescent run and nothing else
Same 150 bulbs: 150 W in LED, 1,050 W in incandescent. On a two-story run the bulb type decides whether you need a second circuit.
The cord matters at this distance too. A 50-foot 14 AWG outdoor cord publishes a 15 A / 1875 W rating, which is the headroom you want when the run is long and the whole display is downstream of it. A 16-gauge cord is rated 13 A and is fine for one string on a porch; it is the wrong cord for the main artery. Hanging it once
On a two-story house, every trip up the ladder has a cost, so the fastening decision is worth ten minutes of thought. There is no single answer, because it depends on your frontage and whether you light the upper eave and the rakes. The method is fixed though: measure the lower eave, the upper eave, and each rake, and remember the rake is longer than the horizontal distance it covers. A 24 ft gable at a 6/12 pitch needs about 27 ft of light across the two rakes, not 24.
›Can I run the whole display from one outdoor outlet?
