How many stakes a path takes
The arithmetic
- One stake per socket
- At 12 in socket spacing: 100 stakes = 100 ft of bulbs
- Both sides of a walkway: 100 / 2 = 50 ft of path
- A 30 ft front walk, both sides: 60 stakes
A 100-pack lines both sides of a 50 ft path at 12 in spacing. Most front walks take a single pack with stakes to spare — which is useful, because a few will break in hard ground.
Socket spacing is set by the stringer, not the stake. The stringers, their spacing and their gauge are on C9 Christmas lights.
Length is the spec
A stake has to go into the ground far enough to hold, and stand out of it far enough to lift the bulb clear of the grass. The 8.5 to 10 in stakes give the most of both, which is what keeps bulbs visible above a few inches of snow. The 4.5 in stakes, our skip, put the bulb almost on the lawn once they are pushed in far enough to hold.
The head keeps the line straight
The notched 7.5 in stakes have four notches on the head for the stringer wire. That keeps the wire in line between stakes, so the walkway reads as a straight row of bulbs rather than a string wandering along the lawn.
Green for lawns, black for beds
In daylight, the stakes are what people see. The green 9 in stakes disappear into grass; black stakes disappear into mulch and dark soil. Match the stake to what it stands in.
