The best Christmas luminaries, ranked on how the light actually gets in

A luminary on a shared cord cannot be spaced to fit your path, and not one electric set here publishes its string length. That is the spec that decides the purchase.

By Sawyer V. · Published

Wettal Christmas luminaria kit, 31 pieces, electric, weighted bases and stakes

Buy the Wettal 31-piece luminaria kit: it is the only set on this page that publishes weighted bases and anchor stakes, which is the one thing a paper or plastic bag standing on an open path in December actually needs. If there is no outdoor outlet near the walk, the BlissfulTie 50-pack is the answer instead: fifty independent bags with a flameless candle in each, placed wherever you like.

A luminary is the oldest outdoor Christmas light there is — a bag, a weight and a flame — and it is still the cheapest way to light a path end to end. What has changed is that the bags now arrive in three completely different systems, and the listings do not treat that as a specification worth stating. It is the only thing on this page that decides whether the set fits your path.

Wreath & Watt earns a commission on qualifying purchases made through the Amazon links on this page. It costs you nothing and it does not change the order of the picks — here is exactly how we are funded.

Good

  • The only set on this page that publishes both weighted bases and anchor stakes, which on an open December path is the difference between a lit line and a row of bags in the hedge
  • Weatherproof is published rather than implied, and it is the only one here that uses that word for the whole assembly rather than for the bag alone
  • A complete kit — bags, string, bases and stakes in one box — so there is no second order for the light and no third for something to hold it down

Watch out

  • Thirty-one pieces is a piece count, not a bag count: the listing never says how many of the 31 are bags, so you cannot work out what length of path it covers
  • No published string length, which on a shared-cord set is the figure that decides whether it reaches the end of the walk
  • A shared cord fixes the spacing at whatever the sockets are, so you cannot stretch the line to fit a longer path the way you can with independent bags
  • An electric set needs an outdoor outlet at the start of the path, which is the constraint that rules it out for a lot of front gardens

Good

  • Fifty independent bags is the longest line on this page and the only count here that does both sides of a front walk with spares, because nothing is tied to a cord
  • The candles come in the box, so the set is complete without a second order — which is not true of either paper set here
  • Waterproof and reusable plastic, published, which is what makes a fifty-bag outlay a multi-season one rather than a December one
  • Independent bags can be spaced to suit the path rather than to suit a socket spacing someone else chose

Watch out

  • Fifty bags means fifty cells to buy and fifty to change, and the listing publishes neither the cell type nor a run time — so the one running cost that matters cannot be planned before it arrives
  • Publishes no bag dimensions, so how tall the lit shape stands next to a path is unknown
  • No weighting and no stakes published, on fifty light plastic bags that have to stand up outdoors
  • A star cutout commits the line to a look; the plain sets here do not

Good

  • Plain white is the traditional luminary and the one that reads as a row of light rather than a row of printed shapes — the only undecorated bag on this page
  • Plug-in means no cells at all: one outlet lights the whole line and nothing needs changing halfway through December
  • Waterproof reusable plastic at the smallest count here, which makes it the low-commitment way into the format

Watch out

  • Ten bags is the shortest line on this page — about enough for one side of a short walk and nothing else
  • No published string length, so whether ten bags reach from the outlet to the end of the path is unknown before it arrives
  • The spacing is fixed by the cord, so a longer path cannot be covered by spreading these out
  • No weighting and no stakes published

Good

  • The only listing on this page that publishes dimensions at all, which is the difference between knowing what the lit line will look like beside a path and guessing from a photograph
  • Twenty-four bags is the count that does both sides of a front walk at a sensible gap without leaving two thirds of the box unopened
  • Waterproof plastic, published, so it is a set that comes back out next year

Watch out

  • Publishes no light system at all — no candle, no string, no statement either way — so you are buying bags and sourcing the light separately
  • The published 15 x 9 x 25 in is three figures with no labels, so which is the height of the standing bag is not actually stated
  • No weighting and no stakes published
  • A set with no light in it is two orders, and the second one decides the running cost

Good

  • The only listing here that publishes a fire claim of any kind, which on a paper bag with a light inside is the claim you would most want to see
  • Paper folds flat, so fifty of these store in the space one plastic bag takes — the one real storage argument in this category
  • Fifty bags at the lowest cost per bag on the page by a wide margin, which is what makes a long line affordable at all

Watch out

  • No weather claim at all, and paper on a wet path in December is a one-night product rather than a one-season one
  • Flame resistant is published with no standard, no test and no certifying body named, and this site has tested nothing — treat it as the listing's word, not a rating
  • No light included and no light system stated, so this is bags only
  • No published dimensions and no weighting

#6 — skip this

Geetery LED luminary bags, 20 pieces, 2 string lights, hexagonal star

20 bags, 2 string lights, hexagonal star

Skip this here. Twenty bags for what the fifty-bag set with fifty candles costs, and a listing that publishes no material, no weather claim, no dimensions and no string length. The two-string split is a good idea. Everything else about it is a blank, on a page where the field's silence is the whole problem.

Our skip. The two-string split is a genuinely good idea and everything else about this listing is a blank. On a page where the field's silence is the whole problem, this is the listing that says least while costing most per bag.

Good

  • Two strings rather than one, which means the twenty bags can be split into two runs — one each side of a walk, or one on a path and one along a step
  • An LED string is the no-battery option, so there is nothing to change mid-December

Watch out

  • Publishes the least of anything on this page: no material, no weather claim, no dimensions and no string length — four of the specs that decide whether a luminary works outdoors, all absent
  • Twenty bags for what the fifty-bag set with fifty candles costs, which is the worst count-for-money on the page by our arithmetic
  • No material stated at all, so whether these are paper or plastic — the single thing that decides if they survive one wet night — is unknown until the box opens

How we ranked these

The light system first, because it governs everything else. Then published bag count, because that is what turns a tape measure into an order. Then material and weather, then whether anything holds the bag down. Nothing here has been lit by us; every figure is one the listing prints, and the gaps are named as gaps.

One of six publishes anything that holds the bag down. One of six publishes a bag size. The Wettal publishes 31 pieces without saying how many are bags.

The cord decides the spacing, not you

This is the distinction the category never draws, and it splits the six sets on this page into three groups that behave nothing like each other.

A shared-string set — the Wettal kit, the plain white 10-pack and the Geetery 20 — threads every bag onto one cord. The cord length is therefore the run length, and the gap between sockets is the spacing, whether or not that suits the path you are lighting. You cannot stretch it. Not one of those three publishes its string length.

A candle-per-bag set — the BlissfulTie 50 — has no cord at all. Each bag is independent, so the line is as long as the bag count allows and the gaps are whatever you choose. The cost is one cell per bag, and the listing does not say what kind.

A bags-only set — the Honeydak 24 and the Stmarry 50 — publishes no light system either way. Those are two orders, and the second one sets the running cost. The flameless pillars and tea lights that go in them are on the best flameless candles.

The arithmetic

  1. Shared-string sets here: 3 of 6
  2. Of those 3, number publishing a string length: 0
  3. Candle-per-bag sets publishing a cell type or run time: 0
  4. Sets publishing no light system at all: 2 of 6

Ours, by counting the listings. Every set on this page withholds the one figure its own light system makes decisive — the string length on a corded set, the cell and the run time on a candle set. Buy the system that suits your path, then expect to find out the number when the box opens.

How many bags a front walk takes

This site’s Christmas pathway lights page uses a 30 ft front walk as its reference and measures staked candy-cane markers at 1.13 ft apart, which is deliberately tight so the line reads as a continuous edge. Luminaries are the opposite — each one is a separate glowing object, and they are placed much further apart. Three feet is the gap we have assumed below, and it is an assumption: not one listing in this field publishes a recommended spacing.

The arithmetic

  1. 30 ft walk, one side, bags 3 ft apart: 30 / 3 = 10 gaps, so 11 bags
  2. Both sides of the same walk: 22 bags
  3. At the 1.13 ft spacing the candy-cane page measured: 30 / 1.13 = 27 bags a side
  4. A 50-bag set at 3 ft apart: 49 gaps x 3 = 147 ft of edge

Ours, from a stated 3 ft gap and this site's own 30 ft reference walk. The 10-pack is one side of a short walk and nothing more. Twenty-four bags is the count that does both sides properly. Fifty bags is not a front walk at all — it is both sides plus a driveway edge, or a walk lit twice as densely.

That arithmetic is why the Honeydak 24 is the count most buyers actually want and the Geetery 20 is awkward: twenty bags on two strings is ten a side, which at three feet covers 27 ft of a 30 ft walk and stops three feet short of the step. The 50-packs are not oversized by mistake — they are sold for the driveway, for a church path, or for a line tight enough to read as continuous. If your walk is short, the money is better spent on the staked markers, which are designed for that spacing.

The size nobody publishes, and what it costs you

Five of these six listings never say how big the bag is. That is a stranger gap than it sounds, because the bag size decides two things at once: how the lit shape reads from the door, and how much of the path edge each one actually occupies. A six-inch tea-light bag and a foot-tall one produce completely different lines from the same box count, and only the Honeydak set gives you a number to work with — and even that one prints 15 x 9 x 25 in without saying which figure is which.

The arithmetic

  1. Only published figure in the field: 15 x 9 x 25 in, unlabeled
  2. If the 9 in is the footprint width, at 3 ft centers: 36 - 9 = 27 in dark between bags
  3. The bag then occupies 9 / 36 = one quarter of the gap
  4. Listings publishing any dimension at all: 1 of 6

Ours, from the one dimension this field publishes and a stated 3 ft spacing. At those numbers a luminary line is roughly a quarter object and three quarters darkness, which is exactly the look the format is for — a row of separate glows, not a continuous edge. It also means the bag size changes the spacing you want, which is why five listings leaving it out is a real problem rather than a cosmetic one.

The practical consequence: if you are buying a bags-only set and plan to space it yourself, order one pack, lay it out on the path before the rest arrives, and settle the gap with the actual bag in your hand. That is the only way to get the spacing right in a category that publishes neither a bag size nor a recommended gap.

Fifty bags is fifty batteries

The candle sets look like the simple option because there is no cord, and for one evening they are. Across a December they are the format with a consumable in it, and the size of that consumable scales with the thing you bought the set for.

The arithmetic

  1. Lit 6 pm to 11 pm: 5 hours a night (an assumption)
  2. December: 31 nights x 5 = 155 hours per candle
  3. A 50-bag line with a candle in every bag: 50 cells to buy, 50 to change
  4. Listings here publishing a cell type or a run time: 0 of 6

About 155 hours per candle across December, and fifty of them on the long set. No listing on this page publishes what cell it takes or how long it lasts, so the running cost of the cordless option is the one number nobody can give you. A plug-in line trades all of that for one outdoor outlet.

That is the honest trade between the two systems, and it is a trade rather than a ranking. A cord means no cells and a fixed line; independent candles mean a line you can shape and a bag of batteries in the garage. The same argument, for the lights on the house, is on battery vs plug-in decorations.

What holds the bag down

A luminary is a lightweight open-topped bag standing unsecured on a path. It is the most wind-vulnerable object in outdoor Christmas decorating, and it is the thing this field is quietest about: one listing of the six publishes weighted bases, one publishes anchor stakes, and they are the same listing.

The traditional answer is sand — two or three inches in the bottom of each bag, which both weights it and insulates the base. That works with paper bags and a real candle, and it is still the cheapest fix. It also means the bags cannot be folded flat and put away full, which is the part people forget in January. The Wettal kit is the only set here that ships its own answer, and that is the whole reason it takes the award on a page where it publishes less about its bag count than anything else.

Paper or plastic, and where they go in January

Paper is the original and still the cheapest per bag by a wide margin. It folds flat, so fifty paper bags store in roughly the space one rigid plastic one takes — the single real storage argument in this category, and a serious one if the decorations already fill the garage. What paper does not do is survive weather: the Stmarry set publishes no weather claim at all, and a wet path ends a paper line in one night.

The four plastic sets here all publish waterproof or weatherproof, which is what makes them multi-season objects rather than December ones. The cost is volume: twenty-four or fifty rigid bags is a box, and it is a box that has to live somewhere for eleven months. Where it lives is on bins vs bags vs totes, and the damp question that decides whether plastic bags come back out usable is on damp and pest protection.

Siting the line

Luminaries sit at ground level on the edge of a path, which puts them exactly where people walk and where a car door opens. Set them at the edge rather than on it, keep the line back from a drive where a tire can find it, and on a corded set run the cord along the far side of the bags from the walking line rather than across it. If the path is also carrying staked markers or a light string, the outdoor power rules are on outdoor Christmas light safety, and the second-circuit question is on how many amps your display draws.

One siting note the listings never make: a luminary reads from the path, not from the street. It is a low, soft, close-range light, which is why it belongs on a walk somebody actually uses rather than along the front boundary. If what you want is something visible from the road, that is a different job and it is on the best outdoor Christmas lights.

Why the Geetery set is the skip

The Geetery 20 has the best single idea on this page: two strings rather than one, so the bags split into two runs and light both sides of a walk from one box. That is a genuinely better design than a single long cord.

It is the skip anyway, on arithmetic and on silence. Twenty bags costs what the fifty-bag set with fifty candles included costs, which is the worst count for the money here. And the listing publishes no material, no weather claim, no dimensions and no string length — four of the specs that decide whether a luminary survives a path in December, all absent. On a page where every set withholds something, this is the one that withholds nearly everything.

Questions

›How many luminaries do I need for my walkway?

About eleven for one side of a 30 ft walk at three feet apart, or twenty-two for both sides — our arithmetic from a stated 3 ft gap, because no listing in this field publishes a recommended spacing. Twenty-four bags is the count that covers a real front walk properly. Fifty is a driveway, a church path, or a walk lit twice as densely.

›Are electric luminaries better than battery ones?

They are a different trade, not a better one. An electric set has no cells to change but the bags hang on one cord, so the cord sets both the run length and the spacing — and not one electric set here publishes its string length. A candle-per-bag set places freely and runs as long as the bag count allows, at one battery per bag.

›Do luminary bags blow over?

They are the most wind-vulnerable thing in outdoor Christmas decorating, and only one listing on this page publishes an answer: the Wettal kit, with weighted bases and anchor stakes. The traditional fix for everything else is two or three inches of sand in the base of each bag, which weights it and insulates it at the same time.

›Can luminary bags be reused?

The plastic sets here publish waterproof or weatherproof and are sold as reusable, so yes with storage space. Paper bags fold flat and store in almost nothing, but publish no weather claim — treat those as a single evening rather than a season.

›What is the difference between luminaries and pathway lights?

A luminary is a bag standing on the ground with a light inside it, placed a few feet apart and read from the path. A pathway light is a rigid staked marker, and the sets on this site publish spacings as tight as 1.13 ft because they are designed to read as a continuous edge from further away. Different object, different spacing, different look.
