A tree collar exists to hide a stand. That is the whole job, and whether it does it comes down to a single number: the diameter, measured against the footprint of the stand you already own.

The 31-inch fabric hexagon takes the top spot for a combination nothing else manages: the joint-largest published diameter, and it folds. In a category where a rigid collar occupies a 28-inch circle of shelf for eleven months, that is not a minor advantage.
Sizing a collar to the stand you own
The arithmetic
- Measure the widest point of the assembled stand, foot to foot
- A typical artificial tree stand: about 24 in across
- Add clearance so the collar does not sit on the feet: 3 to 4 in
- Minimum collar diameter: about 28 in
Measure the stand, add three or four inches. That rules out anything under 28 in for a standard stand.
This is why the 22-inch wood collar sits low despite documenting itself well: it is genuinely a slim-tree product and on a standard stand it will not close. Right for a pencil tree, wrong for anything else — sizing for those is on slim and pencil Christmas trees.
What each material is actually good at
Fabric folds, which in a small home decides the purchase. It also sags around an uneven stand where a rigid ring holds a clean circle.
Plastic is the practical choice for a real tree, because a water tray will eventually be knocked. The 28-inch plastic ring is the straightforward middle option on both diameter and durability.
Metal is the durability answer. The galvanized 27 in collar publishes both a diameter and the tree height it fits, and it does not mind a water tray — but it is a fixed ring now, where this slot used to hold a collar that broke into flat panels. Nothing rigid on sale here stores flat any more.
Wood and wicker are bought on appearance. The woven wicker basket ring hides a stand from every angle rather than only the front, which matters in a room you walk around — and it publishes nothing, which is why it is last.
Collars and real trees
A collar around a watered stand is a different proposition, and two things change. It has to clear the reservoir so the tree can be watered without lifting it, and it will get wet at some point.
Plastic and metal handle that; wood, wicker and fabric handle it much less well. If the tree is real, buy for the spill rather than the photograph. The format decision itself is on real vs artificial.
The eleven-month question
A 31-inch collar is a large object, and rigid ones cannot be reduced — a full shelf depth committed to something used for six weeks. The volume arithmetic is on how much storage space you need.
