The 31-inch fabric hexagon takes the top spot for a combination nothing else manages: the joint-largest published diameter, and it folds. In a category where a rigid collar occupies a 28-inch circle of shelf for eleven months, that is not a minor advantage.
Sizing a collar to the stand you own
The arithmetic
- Measure the widest point of the assembled stand, foot to foot
- A typical artificial tree stand: about 24 in across
- Add clearance so the collar does not sit on the feet: 3 to 4 in
- Minimum collar diameter: about 28 in
Measure the stand, add three or four inches. That rules out anything under 28 in for a standard stand.

Plastic is the practical choice for a real tree, because a water tray will eventually be knocked. The 28-inch plastic ring is the straightforward middle option on both diameter and durability.
Metal is the storage answer. The galvanized six-piece collar is the only rigid option that genuinely breaks down, which is why it ranks above the wicker despite publishing no diameter — six flat panels behind a wardrobe beats a fixed circle on a shelf.
Wood and wicker are bought on appearance. The woven wicker basket ring hides a stand from every angle rather than only the front, which matters in a room you walk around — and it publishes nothing, which is why it is last.
Collars and real trees
A collar around a watered stand is a different proposition, and two things change. It has to clear the reservoir so the tree can be watered without lifting it, and it will get wet at some point.
