Decorating a mantel without it looking like a shelf with things on it
One rule about height, one about the garland length, and one about who gets the front edge. The rest is arrangement.

A mantel is the most decorated surface in most houses and the one that most often ends up looking like a shelf with things on it. The problem is almost never the pieces; it is that everything is the same height and everything is on the same line.
Three decisions fix it, and two of them are arithmetic. Here they are, in the order you should make them.

The proportion rule
A mantel arrangement is read as a shape against the wall above it, and the shape needs a high point that is not in the middle of the shelf. Our working convention: the tallest element should be roughly a third to a half of the mantel width in height, placed off centre, with everything stepping down from it.
The arithmetic
- A 60 in mantel

- Everything else steps down from there to the far end
On a 60 in mantel the high point wants to be 20 to 30 in tall and off centre. Centred and level is what makes a mantel read flat.
That single change — one tall thing, off centre — does more than any purchase. A mirror or a picture above the shelf can serve as the high point, in which case the arrangement steps down from whichever end it sits closest to.
How much garland the shelf takes
A mantel is the one place where a single garland genuinely finishes the job, and the length question is short: measure the shelf, and add a foot at each end if you want the garland to fall past the corners.
A 9 ft pre-lit garland at 100 published lights covers a standard mantel with the fall at each end, and 100 lights over 9 ft is dense enough to read as foliage rather than as a wire. Who gets the front edge
This is the practical conflict nobody plans for: garland wants to sit at the front edge and fall over it, and stocking holders need the front edge to hook over. They cannot both have it.
The workable answer is to set the garland back slightly and let the stockings hang in front of it, so the greenery becomes the backdrop rather than competing. A wreath propped against the wall or hung on the chimney breast is the easiest way to fill the back layer, and it does not have to be large — the 24-inch Crestwood Spruce at 160 tips is dense enough to hold its own at close range, which is what a mantel is looked at from.
Ribbon on a mantel
Ribbon does two jobs here: it ties the garland to whatever palette the room is using, and its tails break the horizontal line at the ends of the shelf.
