What size wreath your door actually takes
Door width, glass panels, storm-door clearance and the tip density behind a 24-inch claim. The measurements to take before you order.

Wreaths are sold by one number, and it is the least informative number about them. A 24-inch wreath on a 30-inch door reads as oversized; the same wreath on a double-width entry disappears. And the diameter says nothing at all about whether it will close behind a storm door.
Three measurements settle it, and none of them takes more than a minute. Then there is the second question the diameter hides — how full the wreath is — and for that, the tip count is the number to compare.

The three measurements to take
- Door width, in inches. A standard single entry door is commonly 36 inches; older and interior-style doors are often 30 or 32. Measure yours rather than assuming.
- Clear height of any glass panel. If the door has a window, the wreath usually wants to sit centred on the solid area below it, and that area is the real constraint rather than the door as a whole.
- Storm-door clearance. The gap between the face of the main door and the inside of the storm door. This is the measurement that decides whether a wreath is possible at all, and it is the one everybody skips.

On a double entry, a matched pair usually reads better than one enormous wreath, and a pair of 24 in wreaths is far easier to store than a single 48 in one.

The storm door problem
A storm door is the reason a great many wreaths get returned. The wreath needs to be shallower than the clearance between the two doors, and a decorated wreath is substantially deeper than its foliage — pinecones, berries and a bow all add projection that no listing quotes as a depth figure.
Where clearance is tight, the answers in order of usefulness are: hang the wreath on the storm door itself rather than behind it, move it to a window or an interior wall, or choose a flatter wreath with less applied trim. The National Decorative Collection wreath is the flattest of our four at 88 published tips with lights and no heavy applied trim, which makes it the one most likely to survive a shallow gap.
Tip count is how full it is
Two 24-inch wreaths can differ by nearly a factor of two in how much foliage they carry. Converting the published tip count to tips per inch of circumference makes them comparable, and the circumference of a 24-inch wreath is 75 inches.
The arithmetic
- Circumference of a 24 in wreath = 3.14 x 24 = 75.4 in
- Crestwood: 160 tips / 75.4 in = 2.1 tips per inch
- Wintry Pine: 113 tips / 75.4 in = 1.5 tips per inch
- Decorative: 88 tips / 75.4 in = 1.2 tips per inch
- 50 LEDs / 75.4 in = 0.66 lights per inch on all three
Same diameter, same light count, and 1.8 times the foliage on the densest of the three.

Where the power comes from
A lit wreath on a front door has an awkward problem: the nearest outlet is usually inside, behind the door that has to close. Three published answers exist.
A plug-in wreath with a built-in timer — the flocked Wintry Pine is one, with 113 tips and 50 clear LEDs — is the brightest and needs a route for the cord. A battery pre-lit wreath needs no cord at all, which is the whole point on an exterior door, and pays for it in run time. The trade-off is worked through on battery vs plug-in decorations.
Buy the box at the same time
The wreath you choose determines the box you need, and buying them a year apart is how a wreath ends up flattened in a bin liner. Nominal box sizes are quoted against the wreath diameter, so a 24-inch wreath with deep trim wants a 30-inch container rather than a 24-inch one. ›What size wreath fits a 36 inch door?
Twenty-four inches on our sizing convention, which is roughly two-thirds of the door width. That is our editorial guideline rather than an industry rule, and a glass panel in the door may narrow the usable area further, since the wreath wants to be centred on the solid panel below it.
›Will a wreath fit behind a storm door?
Only if it is shallower than the clearance between the two doors, and a decorated wreath is deeper than its foliage because of the applied trim. Measure the gap first; if it is tight, hang the wreath on the storm door itself or choose a flatter wreath with less trim.
›How do I compare two wreaths of the same size?
By published tip count, converted to tips per inch of circumference. Three 24-inch wreaths in the same range run from 88 to 160 tips — the same diameter and nearly twice the foliage.
›One big wreath or two on a double door?
A matched pair usually reads better and is far easier to store, since a single oversized wreath needs a container to match. Two 24-inch wreaths fit standard boxes; one 40-inch wreath does not.
