The best Christmas tree disposal bags, measured in feet and mils
Taking a real tree out of a house drops needles down the entire hallway. A removal bag is a two-dollar fix, if it is thick enough not to split.
By Sawyer V. · Published

The day the real tree comes down is the worst day of the Christmas calendar. A dry tree drops needles with every inch it moves, and the trail runs from the living room through the hall, out the door and down the path — where it stays until spring, because needles work their way into carpet and refuse to vacuum out.
A tree removal bag is a sheet of polyethylene that solves the whole problem for the price of a coffee. The only thing that separates a good one from a useless one is whether it is thick enough to survive being dragged, and exactly one listing here will tell you. Five bags, one to skip.

How we ranked these
Film thickness first, and it is almost the only thing that matters. A bag dragged across a threshold with a hundred pounds of dry conifer in it either holds or splits, and the difference is measured in mils. Published dimensions second, because a nine-foot bag and a nine-foot tree do not automatically go together. Needle containment third. Whether it can be reused for storage fourth, which is a bonus rather than the point.
| Bag | Size | Thickness | Clarity | Sold for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VicMore | 9 x 6 ft | 2 mil | White | Removal, storage, moving |
| Liyaomix green | 6 ft W x 9 ft T | Not stated | Green | Upright storage, disposal |
| PROWEE | 9 ft tall | Not stated | Clear | Storage, moving, disposal |
| Jumbo | Fits to 9 ft 6 in | Not stated | Not stated | Removal and disposal |
| Liyaomix clear | 9 x 6 ft | Not stated | Clear | Storage, removal |
Four of five publish a size. One publishes the thickness, which is the figure that decides whether the bag survives the doorway.

Whether a tree fits is a circumference problem
A bag sold as six feet wide is not a six-foot-wide opening. It is a flat tube, so the width on the listing is half the circumference, and the diameter it will actually swallow is smaller than people expect.
The arithmetic
- Bag flat width: 6 ft = 72 in
- Circumference: 72 x 2 = 144 in
- Diameter: 144 / 3.1416 = 45.8 in, about 3 ft 10 in
- Typical 7.5 ft tree spread: 54 to 58 in
A 7.5 ft tree at its natural spread is wider than the bag will open. That is expected and fine: the branches fold upward as the bag slides on, which is exactly how the bag also strips the loose needles off on the way.
The height check is simpler and more often missed. A nine-foot bag over a seven-and-a-half-foot tree leaves eighteen inches at the top to gather and tie, which is the amount you need to carry it. Over a nine-foot tree, there is nothing left to hold, which is where the bag rated to 9 ft 6 in earns its place.
What two mils actually means
A mil is a thousandth of an inch. A kitchen trash bag runs around 0.9 mil; a contractor bag is 3 mil. Two mils puts a tree bag firmly between those, which is the right place for something that has to hold a heavy, sharp, awkward load for about ninety seconds without tearing.
Dry needles are the enemy here. They are stiff, they point outward, and dragging a bagged tree across a door sill pushes every one of them into the film at once. Thin film punctures in a line along whatever the bag scrapes, and then the bag is doing nothing. The 2 mil VicMore bag is the only one here that lets you know which side of that line you are on.
A disposal bag is not a storage bag
These two products look similar and solve opposite problems, and buying the wrong one is common. A disposal or removal bag is thin polyethylene film, costs a few dollars, and exists to get a dead real tree out of a house once. A storage bag is a zippered fabric case with handles, costs several times more, and exists to protect an artificial tree in a garage for eleven months a year.
If your tree is artificial, you want the second thing: see Christmas tree storage bags for the zippered cases, or upright tree storage bags if the tree never comes apart. The overlap is real but narrow: a couple of bags here, including the green Liyaomix and the clear PROWEE, are sold as covers for an assembled artificial tree, which is a genuine third use — cheap dust protection for a tree that lives in a corner of the basement.
Check what your town actually collects
Worth knowing before you buy: many municipal tree-collection programs require the tree to be out of any bag, because the trees go into a chipper. In those towns the bag is for the trip from the living room to the curb, and it comes off at the end. That is still the whole value — the needles are in the bag and not in the hall — but it does mean a biodegradable bag is a convenience rather than a requirement, and it means one bag can sometimes be reused next year if it survives.
Why the clear Liyaomix is the skip
The clear Liyaomix bag is the same 9 by 6 ft footprint as the pick, with no thickness published and no waterproof claim — while the same brand’s green version at the same size does claim waterproofing. When one brand lists two bags at identical dimensions and only one carries the claims, take the one with the claims, or take the bag that publishes 2 mil and be done with it.
The rest of the January teardown
The tree is the first thing out and the easiest. The lights, the ornaments and the greenery are what actually take the evening: how to store Christmas lights, ornament storage boxes and garland and greenery storage cover those. If the boxes are going somewhere unheated, damp and pest protection is the one to read first.
Questions
›What size Christmas tree disposal bag do I need?
A 9 ft bag suits trees up to about 7.5 ft, leaving around 18 in at the top to gather and carry. For a 9 ft tree, look for one rated to 9 ft 6 in, or there is nothing left to hold.
›How thick should a tree removal bag be?
2 mil is the figure worth looking for — roughly double a kitchen trash bag. Dry needles puncture thin film the moment the bag is dragged across a threshold.
›How do you get a tree into a disposal bag by yourself?
Put the bag down in December. Slide it over the stand before the tree goes up, hide it under the skirt, and in January pull it up around the tree rather than pushing the tree down into it.
›Can a disposal bag be used to store an artificial tree?
As a dust cover, yes — two here are sold that way for upright storage. For real protection in a garage, a zippered storage bag is the right product.
